New Orleans didn't sign Etienne to split touches forever. Kellen Moore handpicked him for a system that needs a home-run threat in the backfield to make the play-action passing game work, and the plan all along was for Etienne to take over as Kamara's legs finally gave out. That transition just got fast-tracked. Kamara tore ligaments in his knee during a joint practice with Dallas and is now ticketed for a monthlong absence at minimum, which means the deep committee Moore kept talking about in camp is Etienne's offense to run, full stop, with a beat-up group of camp bodies behind him.

What made Moore chase him in the first place is what he does between the tackles at full speed. Etienne is a patient runner who presses the line, lets his blocks develop, and then hits the hole with a track sprinter's gear change that most backs his size don't have. Jacksonville leaned on him as a bell-cow and he answered with one of the sturdier workhorse seasons in the league. He's also a legitimate weapon out of the backfield, not just an emergency checkdown; he catches the ball cleanly and has worked to become a real route-runner rather than just a safety valve, which is exactly the receiving-back profile Moore's offense is built to feature.
The honest risk isn't talent, it's mileage and company. He's logged five NFL seasons of a heavy workload already, and if Kamara comes back healthy on schedule, the same passing-down carve-out that existed all camp comes right back with him. New Orleans also hasn't proven it can protect anybody up front consistently, and an offense that can't stay ahead on the scoreboard turns into a pass-funnel that erases a runner's volume no matter how the depth chart reads.
Breece Hall is the name worth weighing him against, because they're the same type of player: explosive, three-down capable, home-run speed married to receiving chops. The difference is context. Hall's Jets offense has been dysfunctional enough to cap his ceiling even when healthy, while Etienne just watched his only real competition for touches go down and is walking into a scheme purpose-built around what he does best. Give me the back with the clearer runway.
