Will Compton wants Houston-Texas Tech to be Texas's last Friday CFB game

TLDR: Will Compton used a wild Houston-Texas Tech finish to argue college football has no business on Friday nights in Texas — those belong to high school ball.

Will Compton picked a hell of a game to make his point. While Houston and Texas Tech were tearing into each other Friday night, Compton stood in front of a crowd of college students on a campus stop for Bussin' & Pate and said the quiet part loud: Texas should never schedule a college game on a Friday night again.

This should be the LAST game of college football on a Friday Night in the state of Texas! You can have Thursday night. You can have all day Saturday. But you should NOT have Friday Night. Hell this should be the rule across the country!! Friday’s belong to high school ball.

His logic is simple: Thursday's fine, all of Saturday is fine, but Friday night is sacred ground for high school football, and he thinks that should be the rule everywhere, not just Texas. It's not a new complaint around college football — Friday night slots have been creeping onto the CFB calendar for a couple decades now, mostly to avoid head-to-head windows with the NFL and other Saturday marquee games — but Compton picked this particular matchup to make his stand because it turned into an all-timer.

And it was worth watching. Houston came out of an early-game shootout with a highlight-reel touchdown grab from Koby Young that had the timeline buzzing.

HOUSTON WHAT A CATCH

The game kept escalating from there — a stretch that included a Houston pick that Barstool Sports called potentially the interception of the weekend, coming on back-to-back drives with the catch of the weekend. By the fourth quarter it turned into exactly the kind of nail-biter that makes a scheduling gripe land harder: Conner Weigman found Patrick Overmyer for a touchdown with 49 seconds left to pull Houston within 2, setting up a shot to tie.

Houston has delivered potentially the catch of the weekend and the interception of the weekend in back to back drives!!

It didn't go Houston's way. No. 13 Texas Tech stuffed the 2-point try — Weigman's knee came down before the ball crossed the plane — and held on for a 28-26 win over No. 22 Houston in the Big 12 opener for both teams, per multiple reports.

TEXAS TECH SHUTS THE DOOR ON HOUSTON’S TWO-POINT CONVERSION FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ALWAYS HITS

The line before kickoff had Texas Tech favored by 7.5 with the total sitting at 53.5, and Big Cat flagged it as one of the marquee games of the slate days out. The final score barely cleared the total and the spread came down to a single stop — which is exactly the point critics of Friday scheduling keep making: these games are too good to be squeezed onto a weeknight competing with Friday Night Lights.

“Back to Friday night. Big game Friday night. Houston at Texas Tech Texas Tech is minus seven and a half over under fifty three and a half.” – Big Cat

Compton's take will get the usual pushback — high school football doesn't carry the same TV weight, and college programs aren't giving up a national Friday audience for principle. But after a game this tight, decided on a knee-down review with under a minute left, it's hard to argue the sport needed the extra exposure. Friday night held up fine on its own; Compton just doesn't think it was Houston-Texas Tech's night to take.
