Kyler Gordon's 3-sack return lifts Bears past Falcons

TLDR: Kyler Gordon came off Reserve/PUP for his season debut and posted 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles, with a late strip-sack of Michael Penix Jr. that sealed the Bears' 31-23 win in Atlanta.
The plan going into Sunday was a soft landing. Chicago activated Gordon on Saturday, as the team left for Atlanta, and the word was that he would be eased back in.

Bears corner Kyler Gordon (calf, PUP) is set to make his season debut Sunday, per sources. His role will likely be limited as Chicago eases him back, but he’ll be activated off his 21-day practice window.
So much for the soft landing. It's worth remembering how shaky this looked a few weeks ago. Gordon hurt his calf in the spring, missed every offseason workout and all of training camp, and went on the PUP list on July 28. On September 1, GM Ryan Poles was asked whether Gordon would play for the Bears again and said: "I don't know. I hope so." That isn't what you want to hear about a guy you gave a 3-year, $40 million extension, the deal that made him the highest-paid slot corner in football, especially after an injury-wrecked 2025 in which he played only 5 games.
Saturday's moves were a reshuffle around him. Dayo Odeyingbo went to injured reserve, Xavier Woods was released, Nick McCloud was signed up from the practice squad, and Buddy Johnson and Zavier Scott were elevated for the game. Then Gordon spent Sunday playing like a man who'd been saving it all up. The game turned on Atlanta's last real chance: the Falcons had the ball with a shot to tie, and Gordon came on 2 straight blitzes.

Falcons had the ball and the chance to tie, then Michael Penix Jr. was strip-sacked on third-and-long. Kyler Gordon back-to-back impact blitzes. Bears take over at the Falcons' 28. Disastrous outcome for Atlanta.
Penix got strip-sacked on third-and-long, Chicago took over at the Atlanta 28, and that was the ballgame. Dennis Allen kept sending his slot corner and the Falcons never figured out how to block him. The numbers people got to work right away and turned up a stat line nobody at his position had put up in 4 decades.

DB with 3+ sacks and multiple forced fumbles in the same game in the last 40 seasons: Kyler Gordon (today). #DaBears
The 3 sacks alone tie the most by any defensive back in a game since the NFL started tracking individual sacks in 1982. Add 2 forced fumbles and he's alone. And remember, this was the supposedly limited version of Kyler Gordon. It also wasn't the only comeback Chicago had going on Sunday.

Caleb Williams returns to pass for 305 yards and 1 TD. And Kyler Gordon returns to notch 3 sacks (2 forced fumbles). #Bears will leave Atlanta with a 31-23 win after Roschon Johnson wisely slid down. Win improves them to 4-2 with New England coming to Soldier Field Thursday.
Caleb Williams, playing for the first time since hurting his hamstring in Week 2, went 30-of-36 for 305 yards and a score, and the Bears moved to 4-2. Next up is a short week, with New England at Soldier Field on Thursday. With Woods gone and the secondary already beat up, Chicago needs Gordon's calf to hold up on 4 days of rest. If it does, the Bears have their most disruptive defender back, right when they need him.
