49ers lose Mike Evans to Achilles vs. Commanders

TLDR: Mike Evans had 94 yards on 3 catches before his sore Achilles knocked him out of Monday's 23-17 win, and Kyle Shanahan says it's the same soreness, with no more testing planned.
Evans hadn't practiced all week. The 49ers still put him out there in prime time, which tells you how much they wanted him on the field.

All hands on deck: Both #Commanders WR Stefon Diggs and #49ers WR Mike Evans are officially active tonight. Evans did not practice all week.
He was listed as questionable with both Achilles and rib issues, and he'd spent the week mostly working off to the side. This is the guy San Francisco gave a 3-year, $42.4 million deal after 12 seasons in Tampa. Through 5 games he had 326 yards and 3 touchdowns, and the week before he'd put up 7 catches for 113 yards and a score against Seattle. You don't sit that guy on Monday night if he can walk.
For about a half it looked like the right call. Evans caught 3 balls for 94 yards, and his last one was a 16-yard catch for a first down. Then he grabbed at the Achilles, and the 49ers went into the locker room up 20-3 while their best receiver wasn't right.

The team listed him as questionable to return pretty quickly. He wasn't on the sideline when the second half started, and about 20 minutes after he was first spotted limping, the 49ers ruled him out for the night.

Without him, a blowout turned into a sweat. Washington cut it to 23-17, and the 49ers needed 2 late stops to stay perfect. They're 6-0 now and still have the best record in the league.
Afterward, the news was about as good as it gets when somebody says 'Achilles.' Shanahan said it was the same soreness Evans had been dealing with all week and that it flared up too much during the game. He also said he doesn't expect Evans to need any more testing. In other words, it isn't the tear everyone feared when they saw him limping up the tunnel.
Still, 'manage it' is the part to pay attention to. Evans played through a week with no practice and lasted one half. The 49ers can win without him, but they nearly gave Monday's game away doing it. Watch the Wednesday practice report. If he's working off to the side again, Shanahan's 'we'll see how he feels' probably means some missed time.
