TLDR: Seattle put 6 on Detroit back on October 9. On Tuesday, October 20, the Red Wings get a second shot at a Kraken team that got home from a 5-game road trip with Ryan Lindgren out, Brandon Montour day-to-day and an 8-goal beating in Sunrise still fresh.

Detroit visits Seattle 11 days after the Kraken won 6-3 in Detroit. Seattle is home from a 5-game road trip that ended with 2 losses, with Ryan Lindgren on IR and Brandon Montour day-to-day after Florida put 8 past Joey Daccord. Detroit has Dylan Larkin back but Marco Kasper, J.T. Compher and Mason Appleton are out. The game likely turns on how a patched-up Kraken blue line handles the Red Wings' forwards.

Detroit Red Wings
  • Rallied with 2 3rd-period goals to beat San Jose
  • Larkin back after missing first 2 games
  • Lindgren out, Montour day-to-day on Seattle's blue line
  • Kasper, Compher and Appleton all ruled out
  • Allowed 6 to Seattle in October 9 meeting
  • Edvinsson holdout leaves the blue line thin
Seattle Kraken
  • Already beat Detroit 6-3 this month
  • Home after a 5-game road trip, 2 days' rest
  • Scored 3+ in each of the last 5
  • Daccord allowed 8 on 38 shots in Florida
  • Lost 2 straight to end the road trip
  • Montour's availability still unresolved

This game gets decided on the Seattle blue line. Brandon Montour left the overtime loss in Tampa with a lower-body injury, and on game day he is listed day-to-day, so whether he plays is still open. Ryan Lindgren is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks. Without both of them, Florida put 38 shots on Joey Daccord and he let in all 8. If Montour can't go, Seattle is rebuilding its pairings on the fly again, and nobody has said yet who soaks up the minutes those 2 played.

Detroit has its own holes, and they got no smaller this morning. Our recap of the 4-3 shootout win over San Jose had the Red Wings still missing 4 regulars. Marco Kasper had a projected return date of today, but the game-day injury report has him out with the upper-body injury. J.T. Compher and Mason Appleton are out too. Simon Edvinsson is still holding out for a new contract as a restricted free agent. The good news for Detroit is Dylan Larkin, who missed the first 2 games of the season and is back in the lineup.

What Detroit has shown lately is that it keeps coming. The Red Wings, 3-3-2 on the season, were behind going into the 3rd period against the Sharks, scored twice to tie it and won in the shootout. They will need that kind of push again, because they gave up 3 goals in that game and allowed 6 the last time they saw the Kraken.

Seattle's form is better than its last 2 results. The Kraken won 3 straight on the road, including that 6-3 game in Detroit, before the trip went bad: Victor Hedman won it in Tampa with 2:53 left in overtime, and then the Panthers ran them over. Jared McCann and Ryan Winterton scored in the Tampa game. Coming home after 5 straight road games should help. So should the 2 days off before this one, which gave the coaching staff time to sort out the defense.

Goals haven't been hard to find in Seattle's games. The Kraken's last 5 went 9, 8, 5, 7 and 11 total goals, and the defense that gave up those numbers is thinner now. Detroit just traded 3-goal periods with San Jose. Puck drop is 6:40 PM PT at Climate Pledge Arena. Watch Detroit's forwards against whoever Seattle sends out on the back end, whether Montour is one of them, and whether Daccord bounces back from the worst night of his season.
