TLDR: The Rangers lost their franchise goalie for the season and are still winning games. Thursday's trip to Scotiabank Arena will show whether that holds up, against a Toronto team that has 2 games to get through before it even gets here.

The New York Rangers visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, October 22, with Dylan Garand in net as the No. 1 goalie after Igor Shesterkin's season-ending injury. Toronto came into the week at 3-4-2 on a 3-game skid and without John Tavares, and it plays San Jose and then Columbus on a back-to-back before this game. Those 2 results, plus the rest gap that comes with them, will decide which Leafs team the Rangers actually face.

New York Rangers
  • Garand at .927 since taking the No. 1 job
  • Rested since October 19, 2 full days off
  • Scored 4 unanswered to open the Ducks win
  • Shesterkin out for the season
  • Waiver-claim goalie with a short NHL track record
  • Gave up 7 to New Jersey on October 15
Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Matthews still the best scorer on the ice
  • Home at Scotiabank after the Columbus trip
  • Tavares week-to-week, lower-body
  • Held under 2 goals for the first time this season
  • Back-to-back on October 19-20 before this one

This is an early preview, and the Leafs are why. Toronto hosts San Jose on October 19 and then plays in Columbus the next night, so it is back-to-back before this game. The Rangers last played October 19 and get 2 full days off before puck drop. The Toronto team that takes the ice on Thursday could look a lot different than the one in front of us now, both in the standings and in how tired it is.

For New York, everything runs through Dylan Garand. Igor Shesterkin is out for the season with a lower-body injury, and the Rangers have handed the net to a 24-year-old they claimed on waivers. He has earned it so far. He got his first NHL shutout against Detroit in his 4th career game, stopped 19 in a 6-2 win over Vancouver in the first game after the Shesterkin news, and had a .927 save percentage even after a 7-1 beating from New Jersey. Mike Sullivan calls him "an easy guy to like."

The Ducks game was the Rangers at their best. Sean Durzi scored 78 seconds in, New York scored 3 more in the 2nd to go up 4-0, and Garand made 29 saves before Anaheim's 2 late goals made the final look closer than the game was. The Rangers are still unbeaten at MSG, but that streak doesn't come with them to Toronto. What does come with them is a team that has scored early and then let its goalie close the game out.

Toronto's start has been ugly. Going into the San Jose game the Leafs were 3-4-2 and had lost 3 straight, and their last loss was the first time all season they were held under 2 goals. Auston Matthews has scored 14 goals in 16 career games against the Sharks, so the Monday night game was the obvious chance to get the offense going. Whether that worked, and what Columbus does to them the next night, is the form story for this game, and it hasn't been written yet.

Both teams are missing a key player. John Tavares is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, which takes a center and a power-play regular out of a lineup that already can't score, and Chris Tanev's injury has the front office looking for help on defense. Toronto also traded for Aatu Räty from Vancouver to add center depth. The Rangers are going with a goalie who wasn't in their plans a month ago. Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET, and the board isn't up yet, so the picks will open once this is the next game on both schedules.
