TLDR: The Los Angeles Kings have spent October scoring a single goal a night, and on Tuesday, October 20 they bring that problem to a Capitals team that just put 4 on New Jersey. Washington has a banged-up lineup. Los Angeles has a goal-scoring problem, and that's the bigger worry.

The Kings come east having scored 1 goal in each of their reported losses this month. They still had no regulation win of the season and have a long injury list, with Zuccarello's possible return the only good news. Washington is 5-3-0 and has won 2 straight, and gets Matt Roy back on defense, though Dubois and Sourdif look likely to sit again.

Los Angeles Kings
  • 2 of the early losses went to overtime
  • Zuccarello could return Tuesday
  • Scored 31 seconds in against Boston
  • 1 goal in each of the 4 reported losses
  • No regulation win through the first 5 games
  • Fiala, Turcotte, Dvorak, Jenik all on injury list
Washington Capitals
  • Matt Roy expected back after missing 6 games
  • Leonard and Protas producing while veterans sit
  • Scored 3 in the 2nd period against New Jersey
  • Dubois practiced in no-contact jersey, likely out
  • Sourdif likely out again, forward depth stretched
  • Gave up 5 to Seattle and 4 to Montreal at home

Start with the Kings, because their scoring problem is the main story here. They lost the home opener 2-1 to Florida, lost 2-1 in overtime to Vegas, lost 4-1 to Edmonton and then lost 4-1 to Boston. That's 1 goal in each of those games. By mid-October they had just 2 points through 5 games and no regulation win, though 2 of those losses went to overtime, so they haven't been getting blown out. Mostly they've been losing close games because they can't finish.

The Boston game showed it. Los Angeles scored 31 seconds in, then didn't score again. Jeremy Swayman stopped 25 of 26, and the Bruins scored 4 straight, 2 of them into an empty net, on the second night of a back-to-back. The Kings' injury list is long too: Kevin Fiala (leg), Alex Turcotte, Jakub Dvorak and Jan Jenik are all on it. The one possible bit of good news is Mats Zuccarello, who could return Tuesday, and a forward group this short on goals needs him. There's no pick on the board for this one yet, so the matchup has to carry it.

Washington has its own problems, mostly on the injury report, but it's getting one guy back. Matt Roy is expected to return on defense after missing 6 games with a lower-body injury. Pierre-Luc Dubois, the top-line center, practiced with the team for the first time after missing 4 games, but he wore a no-contact jersey and is likely out again, probably along with Justin Sourdif. Rasmus Sandin is still on long-term injured reserve with a knee injury. The Capitals had still won 2 straight as of Saturday, and they've been getting goals from all over the lineup without those guys.

The Devils win was a good example. It was 1-1 after the 1st. Ryan Leonard scored on the power play, then Ilya Protas, Dylan Strome and Boone Jenner scored in a 3-goal 2nd period that put Washington up 4-1. Leonard and Protas are young forwards getting real minutes with Dubois and Sourdif out, and they're producing. The 5-4 win over Montreal before that was messier, but it counted. Washington is 5-3-0, with home wins over the Rangers, Canadiens and Devils and a home loss to Seattle.

Roy back on the blue line means a deeper defense in front of the net against a team that hasn't been scoring anyway. Dubois still looks a few days away, so the young forwards keep their minutes for at least 1 more night. On the other side, the Kings flew across the country after a home loss with a 7:00 PM ET puck drop waiting. A team that has scored 1 goal a game now has to beat Washington on the road, and the Capitals have scored at least 3 in 4 of their last 5.
