Montreal Canadiens at Chicago Blackhawks

TLDR: For most of October the Blackhawks played without their best player, and the 3-6-0 record shows it. Bedard is back now, and Friday at the United Center is the first look at what Chicago has when it's whole against a Montreal team that keeps winning games by 1 goal.

Chicago is 3-6-0 overall, but that record includes 6 games without Connor Bedard, and the Blackhawks won 2 of their first 3 after he came back. Montreal is 4-3-1 with a string of 1-goal wins while playing without Ivan Demidov and Sam Montembeault, and it hosts San Jose before traveling to the United Center. Bedard against a Montreal defense still working through injuries is the matchup that decides this one.

Montreal Canadiens
  • Last 3 wins all close: 1-0, 4-3, 4-3 OT
  • Guhle, Reinbacher, Kapanen back in the lineup
  • Demidov on IR takes a top scorer out
  • Montembeault on IR leaves the net to a young goalie
  • Plays San Jose first, then travels
Chicago Blackhawks
  • 2-1 with Bedard back, including a 4-3 OT win
  • Teravainen and Kantserov scored twice each in Bedard's return
  • Shut out 4-0 by Dallas in the latest game
  • Byram day-to-day, Mangiapane on IR

Chicago's season splits cleanly in 2. Connor Bedard missed the first 6 games while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He came back against Pittsburgh and had an assist in a 5-3 win, with Teuvo Teravainen and Kantserov each scoring twice. He followed that with his first goal of the season in a 4-3 overtime win over Winnipeg, where he also set up Artyom Levshunov's winner at 1:37 of OT. Take those 2 wins out of a 3-6-0 record and you can see what the first 2 weeks without him looked like.

The Dallas game was the reminder that 1 player doesn't fix everything. The Stars shut Chicago out 4-0, and that's how the Hawks' current stretch ended. They haven't played since. Andrew Mangiapane is still on injured reserve and Bowen Byram is day-to-day on the blue line, so the defense Montreal sees may not be settled until game day.

Montreal has played more games and has more of them in the win column at 4-3-1, but the margins are thin. Its last 3 wins were 1-0 over Detroit and 4-3 over Buffalo twice, the second of those in overtime. The Canadiens also have a game before this one: they host San Jose first, and that result will change the form picture before they get to Chicago.

Montreal's injury list matters more. Ivan Demidov has been on injured reserve since early October with a lower-body injury, which takes a lot of skill off the right side. Sam Montembeault is also on IR, so the net is in younger hands. Jacob Fowler, 21, made his season debut against Nashville. Montreal hasn't named a starter for Friday, and with a game against the Sharks first, it shouldn't be assumed. Florian Xhekaj (lower body) is on IR and was expected to miss about 2 weeks, and Mike Matheson is day-to-day.

There's still good news for Montreal. Kaiden Guhle returned from summer surgery on October 10, and Oliver Kapanen and David Reinbacher made their season debuts in the first Sabres win. The lineup is getting healthier from the back end out even with Demidov sidelined. Winning 1-goal games against Detroit and Buffalo can mean a team handles tight finishes well, or it can mean a team got lucky. A Chicago team that just got its captain back will test which one this is.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM CT. The thing to watch is how Bedard's line does against a Montreal defense that's still filling in around injuries. A small sample with Bedard has been encouraging and a small sample without him was rough. Friday adds 1 more game to the version of Chicago that actually matters.
