TLDR: Both clubs lost by a field goal to a team that kicked it through at the end, and both have stacked enough of those to make next Sunday matter. The Rams are 2-4 and the Raiders have lost 3 straight, so somebody's slide ends in Las Vegas on Sunday, October 25.

Two teams coming off last-second, 3-point losses meet indoors in Las Vegas. The Rams are 2-4 but have Stafford playing well and a passing game the Raiders' thinned secondary will struggle with. They're also missing Garrett and McDuffie and may not have their regular kicker. The Raiders have lost 3 straight, but Bowers and Jeanty are healthy, and the open question is whether Cousins holds off Mendoza.

Los Angeles Rams
  • Stafford threw 5 TDs, 0 INTs across the last 2
  • Nacua and Adams made the big plays on the late drive
  • Played Buffalo to overtime and beat Philadelphia on the road
  • Kicker Grupe hurt his knee; the punter finished on kicks
  • Garrett on injured reserve, McDuffie out with a groin injury
  • 2 straight losses decided on the final possession
Las Vegas Raiders
  • Bowers and Jeanty both full participants in practice
  • Took Buffalo to the wire in a 33-30 home loss
  • Cousins' job under open pressure from Mendoza
  • Gave up 45 to New England 2 games ago
  • Safeties McCollum and Johnson were among the inactives

Start with the quarterbacks, because only one side's situation is settled. Matthew Stafford keeps giving the Rams a chance. He went 40-of-54 for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns in the overtime loss to Buffalo, then went 25-of-33 for 222 yards and 2 scores against Arizona. Against the Cardinals he led a late drive that ended in a 6-yard touchdown to Colby Parkinson with 47 seconds left. Then Jacoby Brissett moved Arizona into range, Chad Ryland hit a 43-yarder as time ran out, and it finished 18-16. McVay's summary was "We beat ourselves," and it was hard to argue with him.

The Raiders have a quarterback question that won't go away. Kirk Cousins went 19-of-28 for 243 yards in the 45-17 loss in New England, and rookie Fernando Mendoza came in to finish that blowout, going 6-of-8 for 48 yards. Mendoza didn't play in the 33-30 loss to Buffalo, but Bill Cowher has already said publicly that a coach sometimes has to think about a spark. Until Las Vegas says otherwise, plan on Cousins starting and keep an eye on the sideline.

The odds card has the Rams favored on the road despite their record, which says more about the talent than the standings. Stafford, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams against a Raiders secondary that started Darien Porter in place of Hezekiah Masses against Buffalo is the kind of matchup that makes the books shrug at a 2-4 record. Indoors at Allegiant, weather won't be part of it.

Buffalo is the common opponent, and both losses looked about the same. The Rams lost to the Bills 37-34 in overtime and the Raiders lost to them 30-33 at home. Neither team got blown out. Neither one finished. The difference is what came either side of that. The Rams beat the Eagles on the road and played Denver to 4 points. The Raiders' 2 wins came against the Chargers and Saints, with a 28-point beating from the Patriots in between.

The Rams' biggest worry this week is a strange one: the kicker. Blake Grupe hurt his knee making a tackle after his own 44-yard field goal against Arizona, was ruled out in the 4th quarter, and punter Ethan Evans kicked the extra point on the go-ahead touchdown. After 2 straight losses by 3 points or fewer, whoever lines up for field goals matters a lot. Myles Garrett (knee, injured reserve) and Trent McDuffie (groin) both missed the Arizona game, which leaves a defense short on its 2 best playmakers. Alaric Jackson's suspension for the Bills incident was reduced to 1 game, so the left side of the line could get its starter back.

Las Vegas is healthier where it counts. Brock Bowers (knee) and Ashton Jeanty (foot) both practiced fully this past week, and Jalen Nailor cleared his concussion. Dont'e Thornton Jr. is still on injured reserve with a hamstring, and the inactive list against Buffalo was heavy on defense: 2 safeties, a defensive tackle and an edge rusher. If Bowers and Jeanty are running the offense, the Raiders can shorten the game and keep Stafford on the sideline. If Cousins struggles early, the Mendoza question gets loud in a hurry.
