The Rams covered the moneyline cleanly, winning 20-12 behind a backup offense that simply executed better than Kansas City's. The pre-game case that Los Angeles had the deeper reserve QB room held up — Fields and the Chiefs' rotation never got the offense moving, exactly the outcome that price was betting on.

Pregame

We backed the Rams at plus money and that price hasn't moved much. Bennett's rep advantage over Fields — a passer making his first start in a brand-new offense — is the whole case, and it's the kind of edge that shows up more in preseason openers than the standings ever will.

This was preseason football in its purest, least meaningful form. Patrick Mahomes sat out with the Chiefs still managing him back from a torn ACL and LCL, so Justin Fields got the start and the reps at Arrowhead, with Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun cycling in behind him. On the other side, Sean McVay handed the ball to Stetson Bennett IV, with Ty Simpson also getting extended run as part of the Rams' backup QB evaluation.

Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and the rest of the Rams' actual offense stayed on the sideline in street clothes, same as Mahomes for Kansas City. That's standard operating procedure for a preseason opener, but it means almost nothing on either box score translates to Week 1 expectations. What it does tell you: the Chiefs' backup quarterback room has real questions, and this game did nothing to answer them kindly. Fields and company managed just 12 points against a Rams defense that was mostly reserves itself.

The line reflected the uncertainty going in — a short home number for Kansas City despite the star power gap on the depth chart, with the total set at 36.5 anticipating the usual preseason sloppiness. Both markets landed on the same side by kickoff, and the game played out about as advertised: low-scoring, mistake-prone, and dictated almost entirely by whichever bench unit executed cleaner.

The Rams' offense, even without its starters, found enough rhythm to build a two-score cushion and protect it. Kansas City's defense had its own moments, but the Fields-led offense never found a consistent gear, and it showed in a final that left the Chiefs 0-for-5 in games charted here dating back to December.

Injury notes mattered more than the scoreboard for both staffs. Rams tackle Keagen Trost didn't return after a hamstring issue, a real subtraction to watch as camp continues, while Kansas City is nursing its own list of camp bumps and bruises heading into a long August. None of it changes anything about Week 1 plans — Mahomes is still targeting the Sept. 14 season opener against Denver — but it's the actual substance of an August night like this one.
