Kenny Pickett has NFL starting experience Carson Beck doesn't have yet, and that gap matters in a game where backups and camp bodies decide the outcome. Carolina's roster additions at receiver give Pickett more to work with than Arizona's rookie-heavy look across from him. Take the Panthers to win outright.

Neither team's QB1 is under center for this one. Panthers coach Dave Canales has already ruled out Bryce Young, handing the reins to Kenny Pickett, while across the field the Cardinals turn to rookie Carson Beck, the Miami product Arizona drafted this spring to help sort out the post-Kyler Murray mess. Beck getting the first look under new coach Mike LaFleur says plenty about how open that quarterback competition still is.

Arizona's offseason has been a full teardown at the position. Murray is gone, off to Minnesota on a one-year deal, and what's left is a three-man scramble between Beck, Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew that won't get settled by one preseason snap count. Carolina's roster churn has been louder in the other direction — the Panthers added receivers Elijah Cooks and Roc Taylor on fresh contracts this week, even as banged-up bodies like Xavier Legette (stinger) and Ja'Tavion Sanders (ankle) dot the injury sheet.

It's an exhibition, but exhibitions still tell you something. Jaycee Horn is back active off the non-football-injury list for Carolina, a real depth boost in the secondary, and Trey McBride remains the steadying presence in an Arizona offense otherwise being rebuilt on the fly. Neither team looked good closing out last season, which is exactly why a clean-slate game like this one matters more than the box score will suggest.

The injury sheets read like standard August churn more than anything alarming. Carolina's is mostly precautionary — Jonathon Brooks sitting out as a Thursday scratch, Legette and Sanders nursing camp bumps — while Arizona is dealing with real absences on the PUP list in Josh Sweat, Garrett Williams and Tip Reiman, none of whom will suit up. Marvin Harrison Jr. working through cramps but staying on the practice field is a good early sign for a Cardinals passing game that needs everyone healthy once the games start counting.

None of this settles anything about either team's real season, and starters barely playing means the tape from Canton won't either. But for two franchises trying to answer very different questions — Carolina figuring out its receiver room, Arizona figuring out who even throws to it — Thursday's kickoff at 5:00 PM MT is as good a place as any to start looking for answers.
