TLDR: The Giants just lost at home to a Saints team that came in 1-4. Now Jameis Winston has to take them to Houston to face a Texans club that has finally found a pulse, and the books have Houston as a touchdown-plus favorite.

The 3-2-1 Giants visit the 2-4 Texans, who have won back-to-back games including a walk-off win in London behind 312 passing yards from C.J. Stroud. Jameis Winston has kept New York afloat since Jaxson Dart's season-ending injury, but injuries to the Giants' offensive line and secondary are piling up against a Houston passing game that just added Marvin Harrison Jr. Houston's quick turnaround from Wembley without a bye is the main thing working against the home favorite.

New York Giants
  • Winston 2-0-1 as starter before Saints loss
  • Isaiah Likely: 11 catches, 2 TDs vs Washington
  • McCarthy scramble package gives defenses another look
  • Secondary thinned: Newsome concussion, Nubin and Hood out
  • Tackles banged up: Eluemunor out, Thomas concussion check
  • Gave up 34 at home to a 1-4 Saints
Houston Texans
  • Stroud: 312 yards, 3 TDs in London win
  • Harrison Jr. joins Collins in passing game
  • Beat Jacksonville and crushed Tennessee 26-3 in back-to-back weeks
  • Back from London with no bye
  • Two tackles inactive: Braden Smith, Nate Thomas
  • Montgomery out; Marks managed 56 yards on 15 carries

This is a quarterback game on both ends. Winston has been the Giants' starter since Jaxson Dart was ruled out for the rest of the regular season, and he went 2-0-1 before the Saints game. That run included a 36-24 win over Arizona and a 27-27 tie in Washington, where John Harbaugh called his play "amazing." Harbaugh has also said the offense was built for a different quarterback and is only now picking up more "Jameis-type things." On the other side, C.J. Stroud is playing like the guy Houston paid for: 24 of 34 for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns at Wembley, with Ka'imi Fairbairn's 49-yarder at the gun beating Jacksonville 34-31.

Neither team comes in healthy. The Giants played Sunday without OT Jermaine Eluemunor. Andrew Thomas was being checked for a concussion, Darnell Mooney had a neck injury, and Greg Newsome II was ruled out with a concussion, so this week's practice reports carry real weight for both lines. Houston has its own offensive-line problems, with Braden Smith and Nate Thomas both inactive in London, and David Montgomery was out too, leaving the backfield to Woody Marks. Marvin Harrison Jr. made his Texans debut with 3 catches for 34 yards, which gives Stroud another target next to Nico Collins.

The schedule matters here. The Texans flew back from London and play again 7 days later, at home but without a bye to reset. The Giants stay in the States, but they have to take a short week of practice to fix a defense that just gave up 34 to New Orleans. Kickoff is 12:00 PM CT on Sunday, October 25, indoors in Houston.

The records look backwards from the spread. New York is 3-2-1 and Houston is 2-4, yet the Texans are laying more than a touchdown. That comes from how each team got there. Houston started 0-3 by a combined 10 points in the last 2 of those losses, then crushed Tennessee 26-3 and beat a division leader on the road. The Giants have won ugly, like a 12-7 grind over Tennessee, and they haven't won since the Arizona game, a stretch that ended with a home loss to a 1-4 team.

Watch the Giants' secondary. Newsome's concussion came on top of Tyler Nubin and Colton Hood already being inactive. A thin defensive backfield against Stroud, Collins and now Harrison is the matchup that decides how much Houston scores. New York's best path is the J.J. McCarthy change-of-pace package Harbaugh keeps running behind Winston, plus Isaiah Likely, who caught 11 balls for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns in Washington. That works best if the game stays close. If the Giants fall behind in a dome, it will be hard for them to keep up.
