Detroit's price on this one has come down a good deal since it first posted, and that's fair — resting Goff always shrinks the gap. But the Commanders are trotting out a quarterback who threw an interception in his last outing, doing it behind two backup offensive tackles, while Detroit's QB2 battle at least has a full camp of reps behind it. We're staying with the Lions here, just with less conviction than when this first went up.

Commanders
  • Blew out Miami 20-7 in preseason opener
  • Won 2 straight, per current form
  • Mariota out for rest of preseason (MCL sprain)
  • Two O-line starters out, Newton lost for the year
Lions
  • Goff healthy, simply being rested — no real injury concern
  • Full training camp behind the Dobbs-Altmyer QB2 battle
  • Lost 4 of last 5 preseason games
  • Sam LaPorta and multiple DBs still questionable

Kickoff is 12:00 PM ET, and neither team is treating this like a real game up top. Detroit's staff already ruled Goff out this week, leaving Josh Dobbs and Luke Altmyer to keep fighting for the backup job behind him — Dobbs the presumed favorite after signing this offseason, Altmyer the undrafted rookie trying to force the issue. Washington's picture is messier: Mariota is out for the rest of the preseason with a sprained MCL, so Sam Hartman gets another shot to prove he's more than a camp arm after an interception-marred debut against Miami, with Athan Kaliakmanis behind him.

The injury sheets tilt the roster battle further. Washington is already down two projected starting offensive linemen in Laremy Tunsil and Nick Allegretti, plus DT Jer'Zhan Newton for the year after pectoral surgery — not exactly the protection you want breaking in a green quarterback room. Detroit has its own list to sort through, with Sam LaPorta's hip injury still unresolved and defensive backs Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and D.J. Reed both questionable. None of it screams marquee matchup, which is part of why the number here has settled about where you'd expect for two teams resting their best players.

Strip away the vets and this becomes an evaluation game, and that's exactly how both coaching staffs are describing it. Washington is coming off a preseason-opening blowout of Miami that at least gave Hartman some good moments to build on, even if his final stat line wasn't pretty. Detroit, meanwhile, dropped its own opener to Cincinnati and has now lost 4 of its last 5 preseason tuneups — hardly a sample size to hang anything on, but it's the version of the Lions taking the field today.

For the fringe roster names, this is close to a live audition. Wide receiver Antonio Williams already put together a solid opener for Washington, and every rep against a Lions defense that still returns quality starters carries weight when final cuts come around. Detroit's own bubble players — running backs like Trayveon Williams and Sione Vaki — need this game just as much, especially with Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco both banged up enough to be kept away from contact.

Both injury reports run long for a preseason game, which tells you plenty about where each franchise's head is right now — evaluating depth, not chasing a win. Neither team has anything on the line beyond roster construction, and it shows in how cautiously both staffs have handled their veterans this month.

Whatever's left on the field after the starters clear out will decide this one, and that's a coin flip by nature. Still, there's a version of this game where Detroit's structural edges — a healthier offensive line, more continuity at the skill spots even without Goff — show up in the margin, even if the final score doesn't look like much of a statement.
