Buffalo's backups have more continuity in this building than Cleveland's do — Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele know Joe Brady's system, while the Browns are still rotating two quarterbacks who haven't locked down a pecking order. Cleveland is also trying to bounce back from a genuinely ugly loss, and preseason teams that get run over once tend to look shaky again the very next week.

Bills
  • Won last preseason game 29-14, Allen sharp early
  • Backups Kyle Allen, Buechele know Joe Brady's scheme
  • Josh Allen and likely starters sitting this one out
  • Shakir, Bell, Coleman all banged up in camp
Browns
  • Sanders gets an extended home audition Saturday
  • Watson also playing, deepens Monken's evaluation
  • Blown out 34-10 by Chicago last time out
  • Lost TE Jack Stoll to IR days before kickoff

Buffalo already got its look at Josh Allen this preseason, so he's staying on the sideline Saturday while Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele split the reps behind center. Cleveland's answer is messier: Shedeur Sanders is set to draw the start, but Deshaun Watson is expected to see the field too as Todd Monken keeps stretching out an evaluation nobody in Berea has settled yet.

The Browns need this one to look better than their last. They got run off the field 34-10 by the Bears, Watson's return from a second Achilles surgery notwithstanding, and the roster took a hit this week when tight end Jack Stoll landed on injured reserve. Cleveland patched the spot by signing Drew Biber days before kickoff, which tells you how thin that room already was.

Buffalo, by contrast, is coming off a laugher of its own — a 29-14 win over Carolina where Allen looked sharp in a short burst before the backups closed it out. That split in recent form, one team humming even without its stars, the other unraveling with them, is the closest thing to a real signal this early in August.

There's real roster stakes buried under the exhibition label. Alec Anderson is trying to hold down a starting guard spot for Buffalo, tight end Keleki Latu is auditioning for a 53-man spot after leading the Bills in catches in the opener, and second-year corner Jordan Hancock is making a case for extra defensive snaps after picking off Watson in a joint practice this week. None of that shows up in a score, but it's the actual reason a lot of these guys are on the field.

Kickoff is 1:00 PM ET at Huntington Bank Field, and with both quarterback rooms this unsettled, don't expect a crisp final script. This is the kind of preseason Saturday that tells you more about who's making the roster than who's going to win the game — which, fittingly, is exactly the kind of game the numbers below are trying to price.
