TLDR: San Francisco is 6-0 and coming off a Monday night win that should have been easy and wasn't. Atlanta is 2-4 and just signed Andy Dalton the day after another home loss. Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium tells us whether the 49ers can keep it going without their best receiver.

San Francisco brings a 6-0 record to Atlanta, but it lost Mike Evans to an Achilles injury Monday, its receiver room is depleted, and the offense stalled late against Washington. Atlanta is 2-4 with every loss at home, and its explosive offense keeps getting undone by turnovers like Zachariah Branch's 2 return fumbles against Chicago. The game comes down to whether the 49ers' passing game survives without Evans and whether the Falcons can stop beating themselves on a 1 PM ET body-clock kickoff for the visitors.

San Francisco 49ers
  • 6-0, winning even while missing Bosa
  • Built a 20-point lead on Washington before Evans exited
  • Bye week right after, so no reason to hold anything back
  • Evans out with an Achilles; Kirk on IR, Samuel inactive
  • Offense stalled once Evans left Monday night
  • Cross-country trip for an early kickoff on a short week
Atlanta Falcons
  • Penix threw 3 TDs vs Chicago, says ribs are fine
  • Scored 45 and 35 in its 2 wins
  • Pitts, Dotson, London give a deep set of targets

The football starts with what San Francisco just lost. Mike Evans left the Commanders game late in the first half with an Achilles injury and didn't return. He'd caught 3 balls for 94 yards before he went down, and he had been playing through 2 broken ribs and an Achilles problem that kept him out of practice all week. The 49ers were up 20 when he left. After that the offense stalled, and they hung on 23-17. Christian Kirk (calf) is on IR, Deebo Samuel Sr. was inactive, and Kyle Shanahan put Demarcus Robinson's chances of coming off IR for this game at an "outside chance," with the Week 8 bye more likely. So the receiver room going to Atlanta is thin, and nobody has said yet how long Evans will be out.

Atlanta has its own quarterback questions. Michael Penix Jr. hurt his ribs against Baltimore, but he got cleared and went 19-of-33 for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns against Chicago, plus 2 two-point conversion throws. He said the ribs weren't an issue afterward. Even so, the Falcons signed Dalton and cut Cooper Rush on Monday, with Tua Tagovailoa already in the room as the backup. That's a lot of quarterback insurance for a team that says its starter is fine.

Penix wasn't the problem against the Bears. Zachariah Branch fumbled 2 returns, and Chicago turned them into 10 points in an 8-point game. Kyle Pitts caught 2 touchdowns and Jahan Dotson went for 87 yards on 3 catches. The offense that put up 45 in New Orleans and 35 in Green Bay is still there. The Falcons keep handing games away before it gets going.

The form card has a strange split. Both Atlanta wins came on the road, and all 3 losses came at home, including a 34-3 beating by Carolina. Home field hasn't helped this team at all. San Francisco has played 4 of its last 5 in Santa Clara. Its only road trip in that stretch was a 32-29 shootout in Seattle. Now it plays a 1:00 PM ET kickoff 3 time zones east, 6 days after a Monday night game, with the bye waiting on the other side.

The 49ers defense has been getting by without Nick Bosa, who was inactive again Monday. Dre Greenlaw's appeal of a 1-game suspension was denied, and the linebacker group is short behind him: Garret Wallow was inactive, Nick Martin is on IR with a hamstring, and Luke Gifford was questionable to return Monday with a groin injury. Atlanta's defense may be in worse shape. Kendal Daniels was carted off against Chicago with a neck injury and taken to the hospital. The team said he was alert and moving all his extremities. Divine Deablo left with an arm injury and C.J. Henderson is out. Bijan Robinson got only 9 carries against the Bears, and those 9 went for 61 yards. Facing a thin San Francisco front 7, that's the matchup Atlanta should lean on.

Every San Francisco win in the last 5 has been by 3 or more, and 3 have been by single digits. The Falcons have shown they can score with anyone. They've also shown they can lose to anyone at home. If the 49ers' passing game looks as stuck as it did Monday after Evans left, this gets interesting late. If Atlanta fumbles away a couple more possessions, the 49ers fly home 7-0 and head into the bye.
