Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2.04 ERA) got the ball for the rubber match, squaring off with Davis Martin (9-5, 3.62 ERA) at 6:40 PM CT. Schlittler came in riding one of the best stretches of any starter in baseball, and the Yankees arrived at Wednesday's finale having already banked the first two games of the series in Chicago.

This one missed — Chicago erased a 4-run deficit and walked it off in the 12th, exactly the kind of offensive burst we flagged as the risk.

Pregame

We backed the Yankees at -142 on the moneyline, leaning on Schlittler and the deepest overall roster in the division even with Judge and Bellinger sidelined. Pregame market signals actually had the bulk of tracked money stacking Chicago, which made this a contrarian price for a team getting a legit ace on the mound.

New York's doing it without Aaron Judge, who's still not cleared for baseball activities as his fractured rib continues to heal, and without Cody Bellinger, sidelined 4-to-6 weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. That's two middle-of-the-order bats missing, which puts more weight on everyone else in the lineup against a White Sox club that badly wanted to avoid a sweep.

For six innings it looked like business as usual. The Yankees jumped Martin for 4 runs in the first and Schlittler cruised, looking every bit the Cy Young candidate he's been all season. Then Chicago flipped the whole thing on its head.

The White Sox scratched across a run in the 6th and broke through for 3 more in the 7th to erase the deficit completely, turning a laugher into a slog. New York clawed a run back in the 10th to retake the lead, but Chicago answered right back in the 11th to tie it again before finishing the job in the 12th for the 6-5 win. Martin didn't have his sharpest stuff — he's cooled off since a red-hot start to the year — but the bullpen and lineup behind him bailed him out when it mattered most.

Both rosters are banged up beyond the headline names. The Yankees are still without Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt in the rotation and Giancarlo Stanton on offense, while the White Sox are missing catcher Kyle Teel and outfielder Austin Hays for extended stretches. Neither team is at full strength, which made Wednesday's grind-it-out finale feel about right for two clubs missing key pieces.

New York still leaves Chicago with the series win, having taken 2 of 3. But Wednesday was a reminder this White Sox team isn't rolling over against contenders. Schlittler's brilliance kept the Yankees in front as long as it lasted — he's building a real Cy Young case — but even an ace can't do much once his bullpen hands a 4-run cushion right back.
