Cristopher Sánchez took the ball Sunday night at 7:20 PM ET with a real chance to put his name further into the Cy Young conversation, and Will Warren needed to bounce back after a rough stretch. One of those two got what he wanted.

The home side cashed easily as Sánchez outdueled Warren and Philadelphia rolled, 11-4.

Pregame

Philadelphia was the play at home even at a short price, and it cashed comfortably behind Sánchez's arm. New York's lineup, gutted by injuries to Judge, Stanton and Bellinger, simply doesn't have the firepower right now to make the Phillies sweat as an underdog on the road.

Warren came in with a 4.41 ERA and a last outing that was more survive-than-thrive — 5 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks against Washington. Philadelphia's lineup, which had scored a total of 1 run across the first two games of this series, picked the worst possible night to wake up against him.

The Phillies had dropped 4 straight coming in, including consecutive 1-run losses to this same Yankees team, so there was real pressure to avoid a series sweep at home. Sánchez made sure of it, giving Philadelphia's rotation — already carrying Zack Wheeler's Cy Young case — another marquee performance on a night the offense actually backed him up.

The Phillies put this one away early and often. A 4-run second inning built the cushion, and a 5-run sixth turned a comfortable lead into a laugher. New York's only real offense came in a 3-run fifth that briefly made it interesting before Philadelphia answered right back.

New York's lineup is still missing Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and now Cody Bellinger, who's headed back to New York for more testing on his hamstring. That's a lot of thump to replace, and it showed up again in a series where the Yankees managed exactly 1 run across the first two games before this outburst. Philadelphia isn't fully healthy either — both catchers, Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs, are on the injured list — but the Phillies didn't need much offense behind Sánchez most nights, and Sunday they got a bunch anyway.

This was the kind of win Philadelphia needed heading into the stretch run — a statement behind their best pitcher, a lineup that broke out of a series-long funk, and a losing streak that's officially over.
