Ryan Weathers (3-7, 4.40) gets the ball for the Yankees Saturday, and he's coming off a rocky-then-solid outing against Pittsburgh where he battled through a pitch-tipping issue mid-start before settling in. The Phillies haven't named their starter yet, which tracks with how patchwork their rotation planning has been behind Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler lately.

New York's still the pick here even shorthanded, because Philadelphia's bullpen behind Kerkering remains the shakiest link on either roster and that matters in a game the Phillies still haven't named a starter for. The Yankees have found ways to win with a patchwork lineup all month, and that depth-over-name-brand formula travels fine on the road. Backing New York to win outright is the play even with Judge and Stanton both out.

Philadelphia's bigger story isn't who's on the mound, it's who's answering to interim manager Don Mattingly. He took over in late April after Rob Thomson got fired following a 9-19 start, and since then the Phillies have clawed all the way back into the NL East picture. The bullpen behind Orion Kerkering is still shaky, but the offense has been live enough to cover for it, including a 10-run outburst against the Dodgers last week.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are trying to hold serve without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, who are both out until at least August. New York's lineup has scraped by on depth and has actually gone 12-13 since Judge went down, good enough to stay within a few games of first place but nowhere near their ceiling. First pitch Saturday is set for 6:05 PM ET at Citizens Bank Park.

Neither club is playing its best baseball right now. New York split its last homestand against Pittsburgh, needed extra innings to salvage a series and dropped a game to a last-place team. Philadelphia has lost 3 of its last 5, including back-to-back defeats to the Dodgers, and the offense went quiet in the finale. Both teams look more vulnerable than their season records suggest.

The injury list is where this game actually gets decided. New York is without Judge, Stanton, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt, stripping the lineup and rotation depth at the same time. Philadelphia's issues are smaller in scale but real: both catchers, Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchan, have been banged up, and the bullpen is already down two arms in Brad Keller and Tanner Banks. A first-ever meeting between these two this season, with both sides limping a bit into it.
