Sunday's getaway game at Nationals Park had Will Warren (7-4, 4.07 ERA) squaring off with Cade Cavalli (5-4, 3.80 ERA), first pitch at 1:35 PM ET. Warren came in trying to rebound from a rough last time out, while Cavalli was working to build on a season that's been steadier than his most recent start.

Nationals lost outright as New York's late-inning formula beat them for a third straight game, busting the ml pick.

Pregame

Washington got backed at home off a shorter price than you'd expect from a .500 club, and the number reflected a belief that Cavalli and this lineup could hang with a Yankees team missing Judge and Stanton. That thesis needed the bullpen to hold a lead, and it never has against this same opponent this series.

Washington's pitching staff is running on fumes. Miles Mikolas started his five-game suspension from the Red Sox brawl this weekend, leaving Cavalli and a shorthanded bullpen to hold the line against a Yankees lineup that's found ways to win without Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton in it for weeks now. New York, for its part, has been piecing together a rotation without Max Fried, Carlos Rodon or Clarke Schmidt and still hasn't slowed down.

None of that stopped Washington from grabbing an early lead and holding it into the sixth. But this Yankees team has made a habit out of the late-inning gut punch all series long, and Sunday was no exception.

New York trailed most of the afternoon before a two-run fifth tied things up, and the Nationals actually clawed back in front 3-2 through seven behind a couple of one-run innings. It didn't matter. The Yankees answered with two in the eighth and one more in the ninth to close it out 5-3, the same formula that's produced comeback wins in this series before.

That's three straight over Washington to wrap the set, each one decided in the final innings, and it says plenty about where these two clubs are right now. The Yankees are finding length from a shredded rotation and just enough offense late. The Nationals keep building leads their bullpen can't hold, and with Mikolas now suspended and half the pitching staff on the injured list, that problem isn't getting fixed this week.

For Washington, the silver lining is a lineup that's shown it can put up crooked numbers - a 12-11 slugfest against Houston earlier this month proves the offense isn't the issue. The pitching depth is. For the Yankees, the concern is obvious: this club is winning close games with a rotation held together by tape, and at some point that stops working against better lineups than this one.
