Sunday's rubber match at Rogers Centre came down to Ryan Weathers against Dylan Cease, and the numbers going in favored Toronto in a big way. Weathers had been torched by this Blue Jays lineup twice already this season, and Cease showed up owning a 2.38 ERA, one of the better marks in the American League.

Toronto took the mound thin in a lot of uncomfortable spots. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. landed on the 7-day concussion IL the day before, pulling the middle of the order apart, while the Yankees were still waiting on Aaron Judge (playing catch again after rib surgery), Cody Bellinger (rehab assignment starting Tuesday) and Carlos Rodon, who's been dealing in the minors ahead of an eventual return.

None of that showed up as a laugher. This one was a grind from the jump, tight enough that neither offense could put it away, and it dragged the two teams into extra innings with the Yankees' three-game skid and Toronto's wild-card hopes both hanging on the outcome.

The Yankees had dropped the first two games of this set and hadn't won since midweek, while the Blue Jays walked into Sunday having taken 4 of their last 5. A sweep would have kept Toronto's wild-card push rolling; instead New York clawed a run across in the 7th, watched Toronto answer late, and needed a two-run 10th to finally put it away.

Both rotations are running thin right now. Toronto has lost Trey Yesavage to knee surgery, Jameson Taillon to forearm tendinitis and Jose Berrios to Tommy John, while the Yankees are still nursing Rodon and Clarke Schmidt back from the injured list — the kind of attrition that makes results like this one feel earned rather than lucky.

The Yankees leave Toronto with a split series instead of a sweep against them, snapping a 3-game slide in the process. For the Blue Jays, sitting half a game back of the final AL wild-card spot, dropping the finale after winning the first two stings — especially with Guerrero out of the lineup and a rotation that's already down five arms for the stretch run.
