First pitch at Rogers Centre went off at 3:07 PM ET with Cam Schlittler starting for the Yankees, carrying a 2.19 ERA and fresh off an 11-strikeout, no-walk outing against Atlanta his last time out. Toronto countered with Braydon Fisher, who's been used as a bridge arm out of the bullpen for much of August rather than a conventional starter — his last outing lasted just 1.1 innings by design.

Wrong. New York managed just a single run and Toronto's bats did enough late to close it out 4-1, dropping the Yankees to 0-2 in the series. Schlittler's arm wasn't the issue — the offense we flagged as thin without Judge, Stanton and Bellinger simply never showed up, exactly the risk the bear case called out.

Pregame

Schlittler brings a 2.21 ERA and an 11-strikeout, zero-walk outing into this one, while Toronto is trusting a reliever to open a game against a division rival. That gap in pitching certainty is why New York sits as the clear favorite here, even fresh off back-to-back losses.

The bigger story in Toronto broke hours before the game: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. landed on the 7-day concussion IL after a collision at third base a night earlier, pulling the Blue Jays' best bat right as their Wild Card push heats up. New York, meanwhile, has been playing without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger for weeks — a lineup that's had to find offense without three of its usual middle-of-the-order bats.

None of that stopped Toronto from doing what it's done all week. The Blue Jays' offense has carried the load with Guerrero out, and Saturday's win pushed Toronto to 4-1 over its last five games — a stretch that's turned a team written off in June into a real threat in a crowded Wild Card field.

New York managed just one run all afternoon, plating it in the second inning and going quiet the rest of the way against Toronto's staff. The Blue Jays scratched across a run of their own in the third before turning it into a laugher late, tacking on in the seventh and eighth to pull away.

Judge's ribs situation is trending the right way — he was back playing catch as of Friday — but that's a September problem at the earliest for a Yankees team that just watched a division rival close the gap. Toronto now has to find out how it holds up without Guerrero for a week, right as the schedule offers no cushion.

Whatever answer Toronto finds, the standings say it's working. One game back of the final Wild Card spot, with a division rival that just got the better of them twice in a row — that's about as loud a signal as a late-summer weekend series can send.
