Anthony Kay got the ball for Chicago and drew the toughest possible assignment: Troy Melton, who's quietly turned into the best story in Detroit's rotation. Through his first 16 big-league starts, Melton became the only pitcher since earned runs became official in 1913 to carry a sub-2.00 ERA, a sub-1.00 WHIP and 13-plus team wins that deep into a career — a stat line that made him one of the few reasons Tigers fans had to watch after the front office started selling.

That selling is the backdrop for everything happening in Detroit right now. The Tigers shipped Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers and flipped Casey Mize to San Diego at the deadline, thinning a rotation that already had Justin Verlander, Jack Flaherty and Reese Olson all on the 60-day injured list. Add Riley Greene (hamstring), James Outman (concussion) and Kerry Carpenter (foot) to the lineup's injured list, and Detroit is fielding a roster that looks nothing like the one that opened the season — while Chicago is nursing its own attrition behind the plate with both Kyle Teel and Joey Bart sidelined.

The line score tells the story of a game that stayed live into the late innings — Chicago scored in 3 different frames and had to answer every time Detroit crept back within a run. A 7th-inning run for the White Sox wound up being the difference.

This was also the back half of a 2-game set, and Chicago now owns both meetings after taking the opener 9-5 the day before. That's a clean sweep of a short series for a White Sox club trying to hold off Cleveland and Minnesota, both lurking within a few games in the Central.
