The White Sox cashed at plus-129, and the bull case landed dead-on — Jobe and the Tigers' staff coughed up a 5-run 4th that decided the game. Chicago banged out 14 hits and made the depleted rotation pay exactly as expected. The catching-depth worry never mattered; the bats did the talking regardless.

Pregame

Chicago is the rare underdog with a division lead, and that split says more about the market's read on today's roster than it does about the season to date. This is a front office that added Luis Castillo and Brenton Doyle instead of selling, which tells you how they view their own ceiling. Back the White Sox to win outright at plus money while their front office is still operating like a buyer.

Neither team was arriving whole. Detroit's outfield picture was a mess with Riley Greene and James Outman both freshly sidelined, on top of Wenceel Perez and Kerry Carpenter already down, and a rotation missing Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson and Justin Verlander for the year. Chicago wasn't much healthier behind the plate, running out a lineup without either primary catcher after Kyle Teel and Joey Bart both landed on the injured list — and losing starter Davis Martin to the IL a day earlier didn't do the pitching depth any favors either. The market still had the Tigers as home favorites at first pitch, for whatever that ended up being worth.

None of the pregame math held up for long. Detroit grabbed an early lead through 3 innings, and then the wheels came off in a hurry.

Chicago's 4th inning was the whole ballgame — 5 runs that flipped a 3-1 deficit into a lead Detroit never seriously threatened again. The White Sox finished with 14 hits against a Tigers staff that had no answer, tacking on 2 more in the 6th and closing it out with single runs in the 1st and 8th. Jobe's line pushed that 6.23 ERA even higher, and it's fair to wonder how much rope Detroit has left to give him.
