Saturday's finale at Tropicana Field pitted contrasting arms against each other: Jordan Hicks, used strictly out of the bullpen all season for Chicago, against Drew Rasmussen, who's quietly become one of the AL's better starters. Rasmussen rolled into the 4:10 PM ET first pitch fresh off a 7-inning, 0-run, 9-strikeout outing against Cleveland, exactly the kind of form that makes life miserable for an opposing lineup.

The Rays cashed exactly as drawn up, holding Chicago off the board for all 9 innings behind a start that lived up to Rasmussen's recent form. The book had this closer than what actually unfolded — a shutout is about as clean a validation of the home chalk as it gets.

Pregame

Rasmussen is the best reason to back the Rays here — a pitcher performing at a top-3 AL Cy Young level against a White Sox lineup that's hot but still learning to finish games against top-end arms. Chicago's win streak is real, but it came without facing a pitcher of this caliber. Lay the price on Tampa Bay in a spot where the mound matchup is this lopsided.

Chicago's already playing shorthanded behind the plate with catcher Kyle Teel out for an expected 6-to-12 weeks with a high-ankle sprain, and Drew Thorpe and Austin Hays are both still working through rehab assignments rather than helping the big-league club. Tampa has its own issues — Shane McClanahan was pulled from his last start with back tightness and Cole Sulser landed on the 15-day IL with back spasms — but the Rays still opened as sizable home favorites, and sharp money leaned the same way, with Tampa drawing the largest share of tracked bets on the board.

None of that mattered much once the game actually got going. Both offenses were shut down for most of the afternoon, and it took until the bottom of the 4th for anybody to push a run across.

Chicago's lineup never found its footing, going scoreless across all 9 innings and managing just 5 hits with nothing to show for it — a stark contrast from the 6-run outburst the Sox put up against these same Rays just a day earlier. Rasmussen and the Tampa staff turned in the kind of shutdown pitching performance that makes a 1-run lead feel like plenty, and it was.

It's a costly split for a White Sox club that's been clinging to first place in the AL Central and had won 3 in a row coming in — proof that even a hot streak can run into a buzzsaw on the right day. For Tampa, it's a much-needed answer after a lineup that had gone quiet for stretches over the last two weeks, even if 1 run is a thin margin to hang a series finale on.

Both teams roll on with plenty of season left, but this one was decided the old-fashioned way: better pitching, no big mistakes, and just enough offense to make it count.
