Baltimore's season has been a slow unraveling. Before this White Sox series, the Orioles lost a home series to the Washington Nationals — their regional rival — to drop to 4 losses in their last 7 series. Gunnar Henderson, the club's best player and a guy who hit 37 home runs in 2024, has been nowhere near that version of himself. He's slashing .221/.291/.410 on the year and told reporters this week that the slump is 'one of the most frustrating things I've ever been through.' The Orioles moved him back to the leadoff spot Monday to try to kickstart something — he reached base 3 times — and the team still lost by 6.

Baltimore's rotation is propped up by duct tape right now. Chris Bassitt just had bone spurs removed from his back. Zach Eflin is done for the year after Tommy John surgery. Jordan Westburg is also out after Tommy John. The Orioles are turning to Gibson in his 4th MLB start with a lineup that has been among the hotter offenses in the league this week. It's not a great spot for a 24-year-old getting his first real test. The White Sox rotation has its own injury attrition, but their offense has enough juice right now to paper over a lot.
