Anthony Kay (6-4, 4.24 ERA) got the ball for Chicago looking to bounce back from a rough outing against Boston, while Toronto turned to Rule 5 find Spencer Miles (4-1, 3.52 ERA) for the 7:15 PM ET first pitch.

White Sox cruised to a 12-4 win, cashing the moneyline pick easily as the lineup's scoring-burst upside showed up in a big way.

Pregame

We took the White Sox at plus money and it paid off in a laugher. Chicago's lineup has had stretches of real thump this year, and Friday was one of them, jumping on Toronto early and never letting the Blue Jays' shaky offense claw back into it.

Miles has been the feel-good story of the Blue Jays' season, a former fourth-round Giants pick who barely pitched above rookie ball before Toronto plucked him in the Rule 5 draft — and he'd carried a sub-2.20 ERA over his first stretch in the rotation. None of that showed up Friday. He couldn't hold a lineup that had scored in bunches all series, and the Blue Jays' offense, already dragging with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. mired in one of the quietest power seasons of his career, had no answer once Chicago got rolling.

This was the kind of laugher that swings on two innings. The White Sox put up 5 in the 2nd and added 4 more in the 7th, the kind of crooked-number stretches that turn a competitive game into a rout before the home crowd even gets settled in.

Chicago's offense has been feast-or-famine lately, and Friday was the feast — 12 hits, 12 runs, no errors, clean baseball from top to bottom. Toronto, by contrast, made it worse on itself with a fielding error to go with 7 hits, the kind of sloppy edges that turn a bad loss into a lopsided one.

The result fits a pattern for both clubs. The White Sox have quietly won 3 of their last 5 and are hanging around .500 despite a battered rotation, while the Blue Jays are stuck at 45-51, still waiting on Guerrero to find his stroke and now nursing a laundry list of injuries on the position-player side. A blowout like this doesn't fix Toronto's issues — it just puts them under a brighter light.
