Wednesday's series finale in Kansas City turned into the pitchers' duel nobody outside Kauffman Stadium was expecting — Dean Kremer and Noah Cameron traded zeroes into the middle innings before the Royals scratched across just enough to win it 2-1.

We took Minnesota at plus money and got burned — Kremer and the Twins bullpen held Kansas City to just 2 runs, plenty good enough to win most nights, but Minnesota's own offense could only push 1 run across and finished with 2 hits. The bear case was dead on: this lineup, without Buxton, doesn't have the juice right now.

Pregame

We're backing the Twins to win outright, and the price still looks generous for a team that added bullpen pieces at the deadline and is fighting for a playoff spot against a club trending toward 100 losses. Kremer's ugly last start is the obvious knock, but Minnesota's overall roster gap here is real. Cameron's brilliant last outing is the wrinkle that keeps this from being a lock.

Minnesota played this one down a starter and down a center fielder — Byron Buxton (hip) was out of the lineup, and hours around first pitch the bigger story broke: Joe Ryan is headed back to the Twin Cities for further evaluation of a lower-body issue that's quietly wrecked his last several starts. Kansas City had its own injury news working in its favor, with Bobby Witt Jr. back in the lineup after an IL stint, and the market leaned Royals all night — sharp money piled onto Kansas City before first pitch.

The total move told the same story ahead of time, and it turned out to be the right read — this was never going to be a track meet, and by the time the Royals plated their second run, the number had already been chased to the under.

Minnesota came into the finale losers of 4 straight, a slide that started right after taking the series opener 4-3, and Wednesday just extended it. Kansas City, on the other hand, has now won consecutive games over the Twins after dropping 4 in a row of its own — a modest 2-game heater is still a heater when you're 20 games under .500.

Kremer entered with an ugly 5.93 ERA and a brutal last outing against Detroit, and while he wasn't sharp, he kept Minnesota in it — the Twins' lone run came in the 4th. Cameron, fresh off an 8-inning, 1-hit gem the last time these two teams met, was good again, and Kansas City's bullpen made a 1-run cushion stand up after runs in the 5th and 7th.

Neither team is playing for much beyond pride and roster spots right now, but nights like this are exactly why the Royals have quietly stopped being an automatic loss for anyone left on their schedule — and why the Twins can't afford many more losses like it if they want to stay on the periphery of the Wild Card race.
