San Diego's the healthier team on the mound right now, and it shows — Mize is trending in the right direction while Kremer's ERA is still ugly two months into his time in a Twins uniform. This is a matchup of who limits damage in the zone, and that's currently the home team's game.

Twins
  • Swept Atlanta 3-0 before this series
  • Kremer under team control through 2027
  • Five rotation arms currently on the IL
  • Kremer's ERA sits at 5.40 since the trade
Padres
  • Mize has allowed just 2 ER over his last 12 innings
  • Won the series opener by 4 runs
  • Mize's Padres debut was a disaster (8 ER in 3.1 IP)
  • Still without Pivetta, Adam and Musgrove

Dean Kremer takes the ball for Minnesota at 5:40 PM PT, a right-hander the Twins picked up from Baltimore on August 1 to patch a rotation that's already lost Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez, David Festa, Mick Abel and Mike Paredes to injury this season. Across from him is Casey Mize, who San Diego acquired from Detroit at the deadline and who bombed in his Padres debut before turning it around.

Mize's first start in a Padres uniform was a disaster — eight earned runs in just 3.1 innings against Arizona — but he's allowed only two earned runs across 12 innings over his last two turns through the rotation, according to Bleacher Nation. Kremer, meanwhile, has been homer-prone since landing in Minnesota, and both pitching staffs are operating shorthanded: the Padres are also without Nick Pivetta, Jason Adam and Joe Musgrove, all working back from injury.

Neither club is dealing with a clean bill of health, which is part of why this series has been closer on the scoreboard than the standings would suggest. San Diego took the opener behind a two-hitter from its bullpen, with Ty France doing the damage at the plate.

Both teams are fighting from a similar spot in their respective wild-card races. The Twins are stuck below .500 in a crowded American League scrum that's cycled through four different teams in the final spot since mid-August, per CBS Sports, while the Padres are holding down a National League wild-card position but still chasing the Dodgers atop the NL West.

Minnesota arrives having swept a three-game set from Atlanta before dropping the series opener here, a stretch that shows a team capable of stringing wins together when the rotation cooperates. San Diego's been streakier — a win, a loss, a win, a loss, then Friday's win — but the underlying arms have looked sharper than the Twins' patchwork staff.
