Taj Bradley (9-4, 3.69 ERA) got the ball for Minnesota and George Kirby (8-9, 3.76) for Seattle in the series finale, first pitch set for 1:10 PM PT. Bradley came in riding a strong turn through Kansas City last time out — 6 innings, 2 earned, 10 strikeouts, no decision — while Kirby was trying to shake off the worst start of his season, a 4-inning, 7-run beating against Texas that snapped a stretch of quality outings.

The pick lost, but not for the reasons the bear case worried about — Minnesota's thin roster wasn't the problem, a 6-0 hole was. Seattle built its lead well before the Twins' offense ever got going, and Bradley's good recent form didn't carry over into this start. Minnesota's furious 5-run eighth and a game-tying run in the ninth validated the underlying value in the price, but Seattle's walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth was the one at-bat neither list saw coming.

Pregame

Minnesota's the road pick here, and the price reflects a rotation that, injuries aside, is getting real length and strikeouts from Bradley right now. Seattle's counter is a starter who just got shelled and whose own front office is reportedly shopping him around the league, which isn't exactly a vote of confidence heading into first pitch.

Both clubs are banged up in ways that shaped this one before a pitch was thrown. Minnesota is without Byron Buxton in center after a hip strain sent him to the 10-day IL, and the rotation is stripped to the studs with Pablo Lopez, David Festa, Mick Abel and Mike Paredes all on the 60-day list. Seattle is missing Luke Raley and J.P. Crawford, and while Brendan Donovan has been cleared to return, he wasn't quite back in the mix yet for this one.

Minnesota had already taken Saturday's opener 5-3 before Seattle answered with a 4-3 win in the nightcap, setting up a rubber match with the Twins clinging to .500 at 56-56 and the Mariners trying to climb back over .500 at 54-58. Neither team came in with much separation, which is exactly how this one played out.

Both rosters have been treading water for two weeks, and it showed. Minnesota's mixed 3-2 stretch and Seattle's 2-3 slide before Sunday made this feel like a coin-flip series between two teams jockeying for position rather than separating from each other, and the finale played out that way from the first pitch to the last.

The absences mattered on the field. Minnesota's lineup without Buxton looked thin for seven innings, and a rotation that's lost five starters to the IL leaned hard on Bradley to give length. Seattle, playing without Crawford up the middle and Raley in the corner outfield, still had enough thump to build a big early cushion before its bullpen had to survive a late scare.

Seattle led 6-0 through seven innings and looked like it was cruising to an easy one. Then Minnesota put together a 5-run eighth to make it a one-run game, and tied it at 6-6 with another run in the top of the ninth. Seattle had an answer waiting, scoring in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off 7-6 — a game that flipped from laugher to nail-biter to walk-off in the span of three innings.
