Connor Prielipp (3-5, 4.75 ERA) got the ball for Minnesota, coming off a strong 5.2-inning, 1-run win over the Athletics his last time out. Across the diamond, Logan Gilbert (8-6, 3.46) took the mound for Seattle at 1:10 PM PT, looking to bounce back from a no-decision against the Rangers where he allowed 3 earned runs over 5.2 innings.

This one didn't cash — Seattle's pitching edge was exactly the risk we flagged, and Gilbert's staff built enough of a cushion early to hold on. The Twins' bats did show up late, pulling even at 3-3 before Seattle's 9th-inning run decided it, so the hot-streak thesis wasn't wrong, just a run short.

Pregame

The Twins were the pick here at +163 and nothing since has changed the calculus. Minnesota's won 4 of 5, just took the series opener, and Seattle keeps finding new ways to lose with a lineup missing Crawford, Donovan and Raley. This is a spot where the healthier, hotter team is live for value.

Both lineups were shorthanded. The Mariners were without J.P. Crawford (wrist), Brendan Donovan (groin) and Luke Raley (elbow), stripping a chunk of their infield and outfield depth. The Twins, meanwhile, are still piecing things together on the mound with Pablo Lopez, David Festa, Mick Abel and Mike Paredes all on extended injured-list stints, and Byron Buxton dealing with a recurring hip issue that's kept him in and out of the lineup all summer.

None of that stopped Minnesota from arriving in Seattle white-hot, and the price reflected a live dog getting real backing even with the bulk of the market money sitting on the home team.

Seattle jumped on Prielipp early, plating 2 in the first and adding another in the second to go up 3-0 before the game was 20 minutes old. That's been the story of this Mariners team lately — get out front and lean on pitching — but a lineup that's been the worst offense in baseball since mid-June wasn't going to make it easy to stay ahead.

Minnesota chipped away exactly like a team riding a 7-2 stretch should, scratching across single runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th to pull even at 3-3 and set up a nervy final few innings. Seattle answered right back with a run in the 9th to escape with the win, but it wasn't the comfortable finish the early scoreboard suggested.

It's the kind of game that captures both teams' seasons in miniature — Seattle's pitching still good enough to build a cushion, its bats never quite good enough to protect it without late-inning stress, and Minnesota proving again that its recent surge isn't a fluke even in a loss.
