Zebby Matthews gets the ball for Minnesota looking to build off a stretch where he's quietly settled in, even though his last start against the A's ended in a loss. Bryce Miller counters for Seattle, and on paper his 2.75 ERA looks like the best number on either side of this one. First pitch is set for 7:10 PM PT.

The Twins are the team playing with purpose right now, reportedly gearing up to add before the deadline while riding a stretch where they've won 4 of 5. Seattle's bats have gone quiet for weeks, and that kind of offensive funk is hard to snap out of against a pitcher who's settled in. Backing Minnesota to win outright makes sense given the direction each club is trending.

The bigger story with Miller is what's happened the last two times out. His July 9 clunker against the Marlins was rough — 4 earned runs allowed in 5 innings with his fastball missing bats less than usual, per the Spokesman-Review — and his July 24 start against Texas wasn't much better. That's two shaky outings in his last three, which matters plenty against a Twins lineup that's actually swinging it right now. Minnesota, for its part, is dealing with a rotation that's been gutted — Pablo Lopez, David Festa and Mick Abel are all out for extended stretches, and Mike Paredes just went down too, which is part of why Matthews' recent form matters so much to a staff running thin.

Minnesota sits 3.5 games back in the AL Central and is reportedly leaning toward being buyers ahead of Monday's trade deadline, with bullpen depth the priority after losing Cole Sands to elbow surgery and Anthony Banda to a season-ending lat repair, according to the Star Tribune and Washington Post. Seattle has its own thin spots to patch — Brendan Donovan and Will Wilson are both still working back from injury at third base — and the front office is reportedly hunting for a right-handed bat and a reliever of its own before the deadline hits, per Heavy.com and MLB.com.

Buxton being out changes the calculus for Minnesota's lineup, but the Twins have found ways to win without him lately, taking 2 of 3 from Kansas City including a comeback the day before this series opener. Seattle's issue isn't injuries so much as an offense that's simply gone cold across the board — the Mariners have dropped 3 of their last 5, most recently getting outscored in back-to-back losses to the Dodgers.

None of this screams laugher — both bullpens have taken hits, and Miller's underlying stuff is still good enough to keep Seattle in it even on a bad night. But the shape of this series favors the team playing with a sense of urgency, and right now that's Minnesota, not Seattle.
