Bailey Ober (7-3, 4.56 ERA) got the ball for Minnesota looking to stop the bleeding, with Slade Cecconi (4-6, 4.60 ERA) opposite him for Cleveland at 6:40 PM ET. Ober's been the Twins' quiet bright spot since coming off the injured list — he beat the Cubs in his last outing, striking out 7 over 5.1 innings — while Cecconi was trying to build off a rough middle-innings exit against this same Twins lineup two weeks ago.

Loss — the Twins won outright 10-6, the exact upset risk we flagged in the bear case.

Pregame

We backed Cleveland at -119 knowing the Guardians had comfortably handled this Twins lineup in the first two games of the series and had the healthier roster top to bottom. Minnesota's rotation is stripped down and its offense had gone cold, which made the home side the logical lean at that price. It didn't hold — a desperate Twins team playing loose baseball is always live, and Cleveland's own mistakes did the rest.

Minnesota came in gutted on the pitching side. Festa, Abel and Lopez are all out for extended stretches, which put extra weight on Ober simply giving the Twins length. Cleveland, by contrast, was rolling — winners in 2 of its last 3 and fresh off blowing the doors off Minnesota twice already in this series, outscoring the Twins 18-6 combined in those two wins.

None of that held Wednesday. The Twins put together the kind of complete game that had been missing all week, piling up 11 hits and forcing 3 Cleveland errors that turned a competitive game into a laugher.

Minnesota broke it open with a 4-run 4th inning and salted it away with 3 more in the 8th, while Cleveland's offense never found consistent traction — scattering single runs across a line that included that ugly 3-error afternoon in the field. A team that had been comfortably in control of this series for two straight games suddenly couldn't get out of its own way.

The defensive meltdown mattered as much as anything Minnesota's lineup did. Cleveland had won the first two games of this set by playing clean, efficient baseball; Wednesday it was the opposite, and a Twins team starving for any kind of positive result made every mistake count.

Ober's return from the injured list is worth watching going forward — Minnesota simply doesn't have the rotation depth to survive another arm going down, with Festa and Lopez both out long-term and Abel not expected back until September. Cleveland's absences are lighter by comparison, with Angel Martinez working his way back through a rehab assignment.

For a Guardians team that's spent this series proving it's the better ballclub, Wednesday was a reminder of how quickly that edge can vanish against a desperate opponent. For the Twins, it's one night — but after a four-game skid, they'll take a win however sloppy it looked.
