Joe Ryan (6-5, 3.38 ERA) got the ball for Minnesota, with Tanner Bibee (3-9, 3.89 ERA) countering for Cleveland in a 6:40 PM ET first pitch. Bibee's last outing was actually his best of the stretch, a 6.2-inning, 1-run win over Miami, so there was real reason to think he'd steadied things despite that ugly win-loss record.

Cleveland cruised to a 13-4 win, cashing the home moneyline pick with room to spare.

Pregame

Cleveland went off at plus money at home, which was live value given Bibee's encouraging last start and a Twins offense that had just gone cold against the Cubs. Backing the home dog here was a bet that Minnesota's rotation trouble would eventually show up on the scoreboard, and it did in a hurry.

The bigger swing factor sat on Minnesota's pitching depth chart, where the injury list keeps growing. David Festa is now dealing with a possible recurrence of thoracic outlet syndrome and is headed to Atlanta for a second opinion, while Mick Abel isn't even up for re-evaluation until September. Add Pablo Lopez's elbow to the pile and the Twins are already down three rotation arms before accounting for whatever Ryan gave them on this night.

Cleveland, meanwhile, is still playing without Jose Ramirez, who's been out since a hand injury but has reportedly been picking up ground balls and taking full workouts as he nears a return. That's a lineup missing its best hitter walking into this one, which made the pregame moneyline price on the Guardians look like a number worth having a stance on.

Minnesota had won 3 straight before dropping 2 ugly ones to the Cubs, including a 1-10 blowout the day before this series opener — so the form going in was genuinely mixed, not a hot streak riding into Cleveland. The Guardians' own last 5 wasn't much cleaner, with a tie and 2 losses mixed into their split with Pittsburgh. Neither team arrived playing especially clean baseball.

None of that ambiguity survived the first few innings. Cleveland put a run on the board in the 1st and never let up, stacking crooked numbers in 6 of its 8 innings at the plate and finishing with 19 hits to Minnesota's 10. Ryan's start unraveled in a way his last outing against the Angels didn't foreshadow, and Bibee, shaky record and all, got the last laugh in the head-to-head.

It was the kind of laugher that swings a series and a mood. The Twins now have real rotation questions heading into the stretch run, while the Guardians got a much-needed reminder of what their offense looks like at full tilt — even with Ramirez still watching from the side.
