Shane Drohan (6-4, 3.48 ERA) takes the ball for the Brewers looking to keep the good vibes going, and he's earned the trust — his last time out he handled the Angels for 6 innings, 2 earned runs, 7 strikeouts. Across the diamond is Zebby Matthews (4-8, 5.22), who's been in Minneapolis and back to Triple-A St. Paul so many times this year he probably has the drive memorized, now thrust back into the rotation out of necessity.

Milwaukee's the best team in baseball right now and it's not particularly close — 72 wins, a division lead they're not giving back, and a rotation arm in Drohan who's been steady all year. Minnesota's without its best starter and its best defender in center, and the price reflects a real talent gap, not just home cooking. Back the Brewers here even at a price that requires them to be right often.

That necessity has a name: Joe Ryan. The Twins' All-Star was placed on the injured list with a left glute strain, and it's the second gut-punch to a rotation that was already thin. Minnesota is also without Byron Buxton in center, which means a lineup that was already scuffling is doing it shorthanded. Matthews, for what it's worth, isn't walking in cold — his last MLB look produced 10 strikeouts over 5.0 innings against Seattle, even if the results column hasn't caught up yet.

Milwaukee has its own bumps and bruises — Kyle Harrison was pulled from his last start with an apparent injury and Jake Bauers has been day-to-day — but none of it has slowed a team running away with the NL Central. The Brewers just took 3 of 4 from Pittsburgh after getting swept by that same club days earlier, the kind of quick bounce-back that separates a 72-win team from a pretender.

Minnesota did snap a rough stretch by winning its last game, so this isn't a team walking in totally dead. But 1 win doesn't erase a stretch where the Twins got outscored badly against Seattle and Kansas City, and doing it against a Brewers club that's won 3 straight is a tall order.

The injury math is lopsided too. Minnesota's list reads like a battered rotation report — Ryan, plus multiple pitchers already lost for extended stretches — while Milwaukee's issues are mostly day-to-day nuisances rather than season-altering losses.

American Family Field sits at 83 degrees and mostly sunny for first pitch at 6:40 PM CT, the kind of summer night that tends to favor hitters. Between a shaky Twins pitching staff and a Brewers lineup that's rolling, there's plenty here for the offense to work with.
