The 22-35 Tigers are giving the ball to Troy Melton, who just made his 2026 debut last Saturday in Baltimore and walked off with a win on 5.2 innings of 1-run, 2-hit ball. Erick Fedde counters at 0-5 with a 5.47 ERA and a last start (vs. the Cubs on May 17) where he coughed up 4 earned in 3 innings with more walks (4) than strikeouts (2). Sportsbooks have noticed: Detroit is a -114 road favorite on the moneyline despite being 13 games under .500.

That betting line tells you everything about the state of these rosters right now. The White Sox are actually playing the better baseball — 29-27, winners of 4 of 5, and coming off a 15-2 demolition of the Twins on Wednesday where rookie David Sandlin retired 18 in a row in his MLB debut. Then they backed it up with a 6-2 win Thursday to take the series. Detroit, meanwhile, just dropped two of three at home to the Angels and got punched in the mouth 7-1 on Wednesday with Jack Flaherty taking the loss.

The injury sheet is where this gets ugly for Detroit. Tarik Skubal is still working back from the elbow (next sim game Monday at Tropicana), Casey Mize is day-to-day with a groin and waiting on MRI results, Kenley Jansen is on the 15-day IL with his own groin issue, and Javier Baez is meeting with a specialist about an ankle that hasn't healed. Add in Gleyber Torres (oblique) and Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) starting rehab assignments at Triple-A Toledo on Friday and you've got a lineup and bullpen running on fumes.

Chicago isn't exactly whole either — Noah Schultz is on the 15-day IL after getting roughed up by the Giants, Jordan Hicks is down with a lat strain, and Austin Hays is still working back from a calf injury in Charlotte. But the Sox offense has woken up. Munetaka Murakami already has 20 career home runs through 55 games, tying Gary Sánchez and Wally Berger for second-most in MLB history at that mark, and Chase Meidroth just hit his first career grand slam Wednesday. The lineup is dangerous in a way it just wasn't last season.

The total sits at 8.5 and the under is juiced (-114), which makes sense given Melton's small-sample dominance and Fedde's sweeper being his one legitimate weapon. The question is whether Melton — making just his second start of the year after opening on the IL — can keep this up against a Chicago lineup that's averaged 8 runs over its last 4 games. Tigers should win this on talent and matchup. Whether the depleted bullpen can hold it once Melton hits 80 pitches is the bet you're really making.
