Jack Flaherty came in with an ugly 1-8 record but a real arm underneath it, and Cal Quantrill brought a 3-0 mark and a 3.35 ERA that's been one of the quiet stories of the Rangers' first-place run. On paper it looked like a pitching duel between a guy overdue for wins and a guy who's found a groove.

Missed — Texas managed only 3 hits and got shut out, exactly the kind of lineup-depth risk the bear case flagged with Seager and Langford both sidelined.

Pregame

We backed the Rangers to win outright off the money, taking Texas at plus-money when the fair number had them favored — a first-place club getting a price against a sub-.500 opponent. Flaherty's a live arm but his season-long numbers didn't scream upset, so the value was on the home side.

Texas is trying to hold a division lead without Corey Seager, who's back on the injured list with lower-back inflammation, and without Wyatt Langford, who's out through the All-Star break with a hamstring issue. That's two key bats missing from a lineup that had just hung 10 runs on Detroit two days earlier, and it left Texas thinner than its record suggests.

Detroit, meanwhile, is barely over .500 in its last 10 but had just taken 3 of 4 from the Yankees before dropping the series opener here. A rotation stripped down by injuries to Jackson Jobe, Justin Verlander and Reese Olson means every start from a healthy arm like Flaherty's matters more than the record lets on.

The Tigers didn't wait around. They put up 2 in the first and another in the second, and that was effectively the whole game — Detroit's offense went quiet the rest of the way, but it didn't need to do more. Texas managed only 3 hits and committed an error, and the Rangers' bats that torched Detroit for 10 runs on July 2 had nothing left in the tank 2 days later.

It's the kind of result that looks worse than it is for Texas, snapping momentum right as the Rangers were trying to build separation in the West, and a reminder that even a first-place team can get shut down when the injury list starts piling up at the wrong positions.
