Jackson Jobe and Paul Skenes made for an appointment-viewing arm matchup for the 12:35 PM ET series finale, even if both pitchers came in trying to answer questions about their stuff. Jobe's ERA sat at 4.97 entering the day, and his last time out was a mess — 3.2 innings, 6 earned runs, 9 hits allowed against the White Sox. Skenes carried a far better 3.83 mark and had just turned in an efficient 5-inning, 1-run outing against Miami, needing only 65 pitches to get through it.

The moneyline case held up — Pittsburgh's deeper bench and a Detroit club running on fumes both showed up when it mattered. The Pirates trailed most of the day and still found the run in the ninth, which is exactly the kind of margin the healthier roster was supposed to provide.

Pregame

Skenes' underlying numbers are miles better than his win-loss record suggests, and he's got a fresher, deadline-reinforced bullpen behind him now. Jobe is talented but has been wildly inconsistent, and his last start was a genuine blowup rather than a bad-luck line. Pittsburgh at home with the better arm on the mound is the side to lean on here.

Detroit's lineup card has been thinned out for weeks now, and it showed in how thin the margin for error was. Kerry Carpenter is shut down again after a setback in his rehab, James Outman and Riley Greene are both out, and the rotation is already missing Jack Flaherty and Justin Verlander. Pittsburgh isn't at full strength either — catcher Endy Rodriguez and outfielder Ryan O'Hearn remain out — but the Pirates' absences are lighter than the pile Detroit is working around.

Skenes' final line elsewhere this year hasn't matched his first two seasons, and it's not just bad luck — reports have pointed to a velocity dip and a mechanical tweak to his arm angle that's flattened his fastball shape, part of why his ERA nearly doubled from his career norm. None of that showed up in his last start, though, and the market had been pricing him more off that recent form than the season-long trend.

Both clubs arrived on uneven footing. Detroit had dropped 4 of its last 5 overall, including a sweep-adjacent stretch against the White Sox, though it did take the series opener against Pittsburgh 8-5 before dropping the second leg. The Pirates, by contrast, had won 3 of their last 5, capped by a win over Detroit the day before, and carried that momentum into the finale.

The injury gap mattered. Detroit's outfield is picking up bodies wherever it can find them with Carpenter, Greene, Outman, Wenceel Perez and Matt Vierling all unavailable, and the rotation depth chart reads like a training room list with Flaherty and Verlander both on extended absences. Pittsburgh's issues are real too — losing Rodriguez behind the plate and O'Hearn's bat is no small thing — but it's a shorter list, and it left the Pirates with more margin to work with all game.

It came down to the final at-bat. Detroit had scratched across single runs in the first and seventh around a 2-run fifth to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, only for Pittsburgh to answer with a 2-run rally to walk it off, 4-3. The Pirates finished with 8 hits to Detroit's 7 but were charged with 2 errors in the process — a sloppy final line that still ended in a win, which tells you plenty about how thin Detroit's margin for error really was.
