Sunday's rubber match at Oracle Park puts a rookie phenom against a proven ace. Troy Melton, who didn't debut until late May, takes a 7-1 record and a 1.58 ERA into the finale, riding a run where he's barely let anyone touch him. Logan Webb counters for the Giants off a start where he punched out 8 Texas Rangers over 6 shutout innings, still the steadiest arm on a roster that's lost almost everything else.

Webb has been dealing, and pairing him with the loss of Detroit's actual ace at the deadline makes the Giants a live moneyline play even in a rebuild year. Melton's numbers are legitimate, but he's a rookie without a long track record against a lineup like this, while Webb has four straight years of top-tier Cy Young finishes to lean on. Backing the home side here is a bet that the better arm on paper wins the day.

The backdrop matters here. Detroit blew up expectations by trading reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers before the deadline, a rental salary dump that still left the front office defending the return. Manager A.J. Hinch has leaned on the idea that Melton's emergence softens that blow, and Sunday is another data point. San Francisco, meanwhile, is fully in teardown mode under first-year manager Tony Vitello, who's said the plan is about getting young players locked into their roles rather than trying to impress. Oracle Park sits at 58 degrees and cloudy for first pitch at 1:05 PM PT, typical marine-layer conditions for this park.

None of that erased the difference on the field Saturday, when Detroit's lineup ran up an 8-0 shutout of its own in the middle game. That's the swing this series has taken: a tight one-run game, then a laugher, with the finale up for grabs.

Detroit is still clinging to its playoff push even after selling its ace, and Melton is a big reason why. He missed the start of the year with an elbow issue, but since returning he's been one of the stingiest arms in the league, and Hinch has raved that the version of Melton on the mound right now might not even be his ceiling. San Francisco doesn't have that kind of building block outside of Webb, who the front office has made clear isn't going anywhere despite reported interest at the deadline — he's a three-time All-Star locked up for years, the one piece of the current roster this rebuild is actually built around.

Both injury lists are ugly, but they cut differently. Detroit is missing rotation and lineup pieces (Jack Flaherty, Kerry Carpenter, Parker Meadows) while still fielding a roster with a winning record. San Francisco just lost Matt Chapman to season-ending surgery and Harrison Bader for the year, and it shows — a 49-68 club that's basically playing out the string while it figures out who sticks around for next season.
