Keider Montero got the ball Sunday trying to erase a rough turn against Baltimore, where he lasted just 4.1 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Across the mound stood Gage Jump, who'd been the best version of himself last time out — 6 shutout innings and 7 strikeouts against Boston. On paper it looked like Detroit's shakier arm against Oakland's hottest one.

Tigers won 11-0, never sweating it, and Montero delivered the bounce-back the pick banked on by blanking Oakland across 9 innings. The -118 price looks like a steal in hindsight against a team Detroit has outscored 32-7 this series. No surprises here — the form case just played out exactly as written.

Pregame

Detroit's priced as a modest favorite here, and given how the last two games went, that price still looks soft. The Tigers have scored 21 runs combined the last two nights against this same Oakland pitching staff, and even with their own rotation banged up, that kind of offensive form is hard to bet against for a third straight day.

Didn't matter. Montero found the form his 3.17 ERA says he actually has, working around 7 hits without letting a single Athletic cross the plate, while Jump couldn't replicate the Boston magic against a Detroit lineup that's given this pitching staff fits all weekend. Oakland trotted out a lineup without Jacob Wilson, who's dealing with knee tendinitis, and without Nick Kurtz, who's set to see a hand specialist in L.A. about a thumb that's had him hitting 1-for-18 since coming off the injured list. The Tigers, meanwhile, went off as road favorites and never looked back.

There's also the matter of what Detroit's front office did earlier in the day. Hours before first pitch, the Tigers finalized a trade sending Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers for a package built around outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith — the kind of news that could rattle a clubhouse on most days. Instead, this group went out and dropped 11 runs on a team that's now lost 4 of its last 5.

This is the third straight blowout Detroit's dropped on Oakland this stretch, and the math is getting ugly for the home dugout — the Tigers have outscored the Athletics 32-7 across the three meetings. Detroit's lineup stayed hot even with a fractured rotation picture, spreading out 4-run innings in the 4th and again in the 8th on Sunday to turn a competitive game into a laugher early.

Oakland's issues go beyond the missing names in the lineup card. A staff that already ranks among the league's shakier ones lost another afternoon to a Tigers offense clicking at exactly the wrong time for a rebuilding club playing out a lost season. Mark Kotsay's group will regroup on the next stop, but Sunday did nothing to change the shape of this year for either side.
