Framber Valdez takes the ball for Detroit at 6:40 PM PT looking to shake off a rough stretch, while Jack Perkins tries to give the Athletics some length after his rotation spot became an adventure. Valdez is the big splash starter Detroit signed to front the staff, but the results haven't matched the contract. Perkins, meanwhile, has been homer-prone and hittable all year, and this park hasn't been kind to A's arms.

Detroit's the easy call here even accounting for Valdez's rough patch — Perkins has been one of the more hittable arms in baseball all year, and this Tigers lineup just dropped 13 runs on this same pitching staff. The price reflects a mismatch that's been building for weeks, not a one-game fluke.

Javier Báez is a big reason Detroit's lineup looks scarier than its record suggests. He came off a 60-day IL stint for a high ankle sprain last week and immediately went 3-for-4 with a double in a 14-0 rout of Baltimore, then kept hitting through the weekend. Dillon Dingler's grand slam and Max Clark's three-hit MLB debut fueled Friday's blowout, and that kind of lineup depth is exactly what an Athletics pitching staff missing Luis Severino and Mark Leiter Jr. doesn't want to see again.

None of this changes the fact that both of these clubs are miles from October. Detroit sits 6.5 games back in the AL Central and 3.5 out of a wild card, and the front office is reportedly ready to move Tarik Skubal before Monday's deadline — a decision that could reshape this roster within days. Oakland's issues run deeper: Brent Rooker is done for the year, Shea Langeliers just had knee surgery, and Zack Gelof is still working his way back. It's not a coincidence the price on this one leans toward Detroit.

The Tigers have lost more than they've won across their last five, but the shape of those results tells the real story — two blowout wins bookending three tight losses, the kind of profile that shows up when a lineup is finally healthy again. The Athletics, by contrast, dropped four of their last five, including Friday's 13-1 embarrassment, and there's little in their recent form suggesting a bounce-back is coming.

Detroit's rotation is genuinely banged up — Jack Flaherty, Jackson Jobe, Reese Olson and Justin Verlander are all out, which is part of why Valdez was brought in to anchor things in the first place. But even a stretched pitching staff has options when the lineup is producing like this, and Oakland simply doesn't have the same answers on the position-player side with Rooker, Langeliers and Gelof all sidelined. Valdez needs to find his form again soon, deadline distractions or not, because this offense is doing its part.
