Casey Mize (4-6, 2.79 ERA) got the ball trying to close out the sweep, squaring off with Angels rookie right-hander Ryan Johnson (1-4, 6.10), who's been homer-prone and shaky deep into starts all summer. On paper this was Detroit's game to lose.

Miss — the Angels won outright 3-2, the exact bear case (Mize's early exit) coming true.

Pregame

Detroit went off at -151 as the clear favorite here, and that price reflected a team that had won 11 of 14 against an Angels club with one of the league's worst records. The Mize injury muddies things after the fact, but the pregame read on talent gap was correct even though the result flipped.

It nearly went sideways in a different way. Mize took a Jo Adell comebacker off his left hand in the fourth inning and had to leave, forcing Detroit's bullpen into extra work on getaway day. That's an unwelcome subplot for a Tigers rotation already picking up the pieces from a rough injury stretch — and it's part of why the market gave this one a real number instead of a laugher.

The Angels made it count. Los Angeles scratched across single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings, out-hit Detroit 9-4, and held on for a 3-2 win that salvaged one game of the series after getting flattened the day before.

Context matters here: Detroit came in having won 11 of its last 14 and playing its best ball of the season, clawing back into the AL Central and wild-card picture. Losing the finale doesn't change that trajectory, but it's a reminder this Tigers team, even hot, isn't blowing out bad teams on cruise control.

Mize's exit is the bigger story than the final score. He'd been effective through 3.1 innings before the injury, and Detroit is already thin behind him with Jackson Jobe, Reese Olson and Justin Verlander all out for the year or on extended rehab. A prolonged absence would sting for a club trying to make a real second-half push.
