Detroit took the series opener 2-1 on Friday, and now it hands the ball to Tarik Skubal, which is about as bad a Saturday as an already-reeling Angels club could ask for. First pitch is 7:07 PM PT, and the Tigers would love nothing more than to steal this one behind their ace before the Angels' bats even wake up.

Detroit's price reflects an ace on the mound against a last-place lineup that's lost 4 of 5, and that's a fair gap. The Angels have shown occasional life but nothing close to consistent enough to trust as a moneyline play here. Lay the price and take the Tigers.

Grayson Rodriguez is the one standing in the way, and his season has been a mess almost by design. He came over from Baltimore in the Taylor Ward trade, opened this year on the shelf with shoulder inflammation, then got rocked for 7 runs in 3.2 innings in his Angels debut against the Dodgers. His last time out against the Twins was actually a step forward: 3 earned runs over 5.1 innings and a win, even without recording a single strikeout. That's the shakiest possible foundation to lean on against a lineup Skubal just beat.

For Detroit, this series is bigger than one weekend. The Tigers were running away with the AL Central two months ago; a brutal May sent them into freefall, and they're now chasing the White Sox with the trade deadline bearing down. Every game against a last-place club like the Angels is one they need to just take, and Skubal is exactly the arm to make sure they do.

The Angels, meanwhile, are staring down an 11th straight losing season, and the front office chaos matches the record. Perry Minasian got fired in late June, John Mozeliak is running things on an interim basis, and owner Arte Moreno's reluctance to blow it up means this deadline could be more half-measures than fire sale. None of that fixes a lineup that's dropped 4 of its last 5, including Friday's opener.

Detroit's absences are mostly rotation and lineup pieces still working back from injury; Framber Valdez is even away on bereavement leave. The Angels' issues run deeper and longer, with d'Arnaud, Rendon and Moncada all lost for extended stretches, which is a big part of why this roster hasn't been able to string together wins even against a Tigers team that's been stumbling itself.

Skubal's last outing was a rare off night, a loss to the Phillies where he gave up 2 earned over 5 innings with 5 strikeouts. Even a modest bounce-back look from him against this Angels lineup should be enough. Detroit needs results more than style points right now, and Anaheim is the softest schedule spot they'll see for a while.
