Troy Melton (5-1, 1.80 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers looking to keep building on one of the quietest great stretches in baseball, while Randy Dobnak gets the ball for a Royals team that's suddenly playing its best baseball in months.

We're sticking with the Tigers here, and Melton is the entire reason why. He's been one of the best pitchers in baseball over his last two months and gets a Royals lineup that's still without Witt Jr., Garcia and Caglianone. Detroit's price reflects a clear talent gap on the mound tonight.

Melton's last 11.2 innings have produced zero earned runs, six hits and 16 strikeouts against just two walks — the kind of run that should be getting a lot more national attention than it has. Dobnak, by contrast, has been steady but unspectacular, working around traffic more than missing bats; his last start against San Diego saw him walk 4 over 4.1 innings with no decision.

07/23 Lineup

Detroit's lineup has been streaky lately, dropping a 2-11 clunker to the Cubs before bouncing back with a 5-1 win, while Kansas City's offense has found some juice with three straight one-run or two-run victories. Neither club is playing meaningful September baseball, but the Tigers' pitching depth gives them the sturdier setup on paper — even with Jack Flaherty freshly on the IL and Casey Mize banged up.

The Royals' resurgence is legitimate, but it's also missing a lot of its foundation. Bobby Witt Jr. is still dealing with back spasms, Maikel Garcia remains out with a hand injury, and Jac Caglianone was scratched from Wednesday's lineup — meaning the guys pulling this stretch off aren't the household names Kansas City fans are used to seeing at the top of the lineup.

That's what makes Melton's presence on the mound such a problem for Kansas City tonight. A rotation already missing Cole Ragans, Kris Bubic and Stephen Kolek doesn't have a great answer for a pitcher humming at a sub-2.00 ERA, and Comerica Park hasn't been kind to visiting bats this year.

Kansas City's recent stretch says don't sleep on this club, and a 5-game win streak-adjacent run like that deserves respect. But betting against Melton right now feels like betting against the calendar — eventually one of these outings has to be different, and Detroit would rather that not happen against a team clawing back into the wild-card picture.
