This series was never going to be pretty. Kansas City rolled into Denver at 46-65, already deep into a lost season, while Colorado sat a game worse at 43-67. Luinder Avila got the ball for the Royals looking to build on a shaky recent stretch, and Ryan Feltner started for a Rockies team that had dropped four straight before finally snapping the skid the night before this one.

This one didn't come close. The bounce-back start never materialized — Colorado hung 6 runs in the third and the Royals never had an answer, falling 12-6. The bear case (a battered lineup and a shaky arm) is exactly what beat them.

Pregame

Kansas City carries the better overall record into Colorado, and the Rockies are still working through a pitching staff gutted by injuries all year. Feltner's ERA sitting well above 5 makes it tough to trust Colorado to hold a lead if the Royals get to him early. This is a spot where the more complete roster, even a flawed one, should be live to win outright.

Neither pitcher was fooling anyone in his last time out, and it showed early. Bobby Witt Jr. stayed back in Kansas City nursing a back issue rather than make the trip, with the Royals targeting a return for Tuesday against the Twins — one more reminder of how thin this roster has gotten by August 1.

Colorado didn't wait long to make its case. The Rockies still needed length from Feltner and their bullpen, and against a Royals lineup missing Witt, Maikel Garcia and Vinnie Pasquantino, that math worked out in their favor for a night.

The third inning is where this one turned into a rout. Colorado plated 6 runs in that frame alone, the kind of explosion that buries a road team fast, and by the time the dust settled the Rockies had strung together scoring in six different innings on their way to 16 hits. Kansas City had 12 hits of its own and even scratched across 2 runs in the ninth, but that was mop-up work against a game already decided.

Neither club is playing for much beyond pride right now, and the injury lists tell that story as much as the standings do. Kansas City is waiting on Cole Ragans, Kris Bubic and now Witt, while Colorado is still without Jose Quintana and long-term losses like Chase Dollander and Kris Bryant. With the trade deadline bearing down, nights like this one are as much about auditioning arms and at-bats as they are about the final score.

For the Royals, it's another example of a team that can't find consistency on the mound or stay healthy enough to field its best lineup. For the Rockies, it's a rare feel-good night at Coors — even at 43-67, they'll take a 16-hit party over another close, deflating loss.
