San Diego turned to Kyle Hart, whose last time out was an 8-pitch opener stint against Atlanta, while Colorado countered with Gabriel Hughes, who's given the Rockies length in a lost season even when the results haven't followed. First pitch went off at 1:10 PM PT in a rare weekday matinee at Petco Park.

The Padres' 3-1 win cashed the moneyline pick, with the shorthanded Rockies rotation exactly the problem the bear case warned about.

Pregame

San Diego closed as sizable favorites and cashed it, even as Colorado's price actually drifted out from +124 to +166 pregame. Sharp bettors still stacked tickets on the Rockies' plus money, but a shorthanded Colorado rotation and lineup just didn't have enough to back that up against a Padres club playing playoff baseball.

The Padres were without Miguel Andujar (fractured wrist) and still waiting on Joe Musgrove, Lucas Giolito and Nick Pivetta to work their way back from the injured list, which is exactly why a bullpen-forward look from Hart made sense on a short week. Colorado, meanwhile, is patching together a rotation with Jose Quintana, Chase Dollander and McCade Brown all on the 60-day IL — there isn't much pitching depth left in Denver to lean on.

None of that stopped Colorado from hanging seven runs on the board a night earlier in a game San Diego only survived thanks to a ninth-inning sacrifice fly. This version was tamer, and tamer was fine by the Padres, who came in having won four straight.

Kyle Karros (biceps) stayed out of the lineup again for Colorado, one more hole in a Rockies order that's already without Brenton Doyle and Kris Bryant for extended stretches. San Diego's absences sting more given the standings, but their bench and bullpen have had enough length to cover for it lately.

San Diego broke it open with a three-run fourth and made it stand up, needing just that one inning against a Colorado lineup that's now lost 4 of its last 5. The Rockies got a run back late but never threatened to turn it into the kind of track meet the two clubs put on the night before.

It wasn't pretty, but for a Padres team clinging to a playoff push, ugly wins over bad teams count the same as pretty ones. For the Rockies, it's just another final score that drops further into a season that was decided months ago.
