Gabriel Hughes took the ball for Colorado carrying an 0-4 record and a 6.69 ERA, still hunting his first win since a 7-run, 4-inning meltdown against Arizona in his last outing. Across the mound, Blade Tidwell has been the feel-good story of San Francisco's rotation since getting called up from Triple-A after the trade deadline, coming off a start where he struck out 6 over 5.2 innings against Houston. Sunday's finale at Oracle Park was billed as a 1:05 PM PT tilt between two clubs playing out the string, and it didn't stay quiet for long.

The Giants were already banged up walking in. Logan Webb got pulled from Saturday's game with back and shoulder tightness, Willy Adames sat out with a bad back, and Marcelo Mayer remains on the shelf at second. Colorado wasn't much healthier, missing catcher Hunter Goodman for the series finale and still waiting on Kyle Karros and Tyler Freeman to work back from the IL. Neither lineup card looked like the one either front office drew up in spring.

None of that mattered once the bats got going. This was never a pitcher's duel — it turned into exactly the kind of high-scoring track meet you'd expect from two clubs with shaky, injury-riddled staffs on both sides.

Colorado put up 4 runs in the 2nd, added 2 more in the 5th, then blew it open with 4 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th to bury the Giants 13-7. San Francisco actually led after the first two innings before the Rockies bullpen and lineup took over — Colorado finished with 9 hits and San Francisco countered with 11, but it was Colorado making its at-bats count late that decided it.

The result flips the script on a series Colorado had been chasing after dropping the opener. Both teams are miles out of any playoff picture — Colorado sits at 49-74, San Francisco at 51-72 — so Sunday was more about individual evaluation than standings. Hughes needed a bounce-back start after getting shelled his last time out, and getting through this one without matching that disaster line counts for something even in a laugher.

For a Giants team trying to figure out who belongs in next year's rotation, Tidwell's outing matters more than the final score. For Colorado, salvaging a getaway day against a division rival with playoff hopes long gone is about as good as August gets. Both clubs now turn the page — San Francisco with real questions about Webb's health, Colorado still auditioning arms behind a rotation gutted by injuries to Quintana and Dollander.
