Webb (7-7, 3.52 ERA) came in fresh off 8 innings against Detroit with just 1 earned run allowed, exactly the form the Giants need with their rotation getting thinner by the week. Lorenzen (3-10, 7.08) had the tougher draw. He hadn't gotten out of the 5th inning in his last 3 starts, an ugly stretch that's turned every Rockies outing into a bullpen game before it's halfway done.

The Giants won going away, 7-1, exactly the kind of laugher the price implied. Webb delivered again and Lorenzen's ugly recent stretch showed up right on schedule, allowing 6 runs before he could finish the 4th. The one pregame worry — a Giants offense that had gone cold — never mattered because Colorado's pitching collapsed first.

Pregame

San Francisco's price at home says Webb and the Giants should handle business, and he's been the one reliable arm on this staff all year. But the sharp money tracked on this game has piled almost entirely onto Colorado, and Lorenzen's actual splits this season have favored him away from home more than his ERA suggests. It's a live dog price on the road side of this one.

Colorado is already without Jose Quintana and Chase Dollander for the year, so a short Lorenzen start matters more than it normally would — there's no reinforcement waiting behind him. San Francisco has its own holes, with shortstop Willy Adames out with a back strain and third baseman Matt Chapman done for the season after core-muscle surgery. None of that stopped the market from installing the Giants as heavy favorites.

It played out that way. San Francisco tied it with a solo homer in the 3rd, then buried Colorado with a 6-run 4th that included a 2-run single, a wild pitch and a bases-clearing double, turning a tight game into a laugher before the 5th inning even started. Webb cruised behind the cushion and the Rockies never threatened to make it interesting.

Little of this was really about today. Colorado is buried in one of the worst records in baseball and leaning into player development — outfielder Zac Veen got the call-up this past week after a scorching stretch at Triple-A, part of the young core the front office is building around long after this season stops mattering. San Francisco went the other direction at the deadline, selling off Luis Arraez, Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle for pitching prospects, a clear sign from new baseball-ops boss Buster Posey that this roster isn't the priority either.

That selloff is a big reason the Giants have been rough to watch lately — they've dropped 9 of their last 21 games since mid-July and their playoff hopes are essentially dead. Adames' back trouble is the latest domino, and Marcelo Mayer's rehab assignment at Sacramento, where he's already gone deep once, can't come soon enough for a lineup that just lost its shortstop and its third baseman inside the same week.

None of it changed what mattered Saturday. Webb was too good, Lorenzen wasn't nearly good enough, and a Giants team playing out the string still found a way to make it look easy.
