Jake McCarthy gave the Rockies exactly the start they wanted, turning on a first-inning pitch from McDonald for an inside-the-park home run and a 1-0 lead. That was the last good thing to happen for Colorado's offense all afternoon.

McDonald settled in after the McCarthy homer and didn't allow another run until San Francisco's bats woke up. D. Gilbert's RBI single in the fourth tied it, and the Giants tacked on two more in the eighth to put it away. For a pitcher who'd been unraveling all month, it was as complete a start as he's had all season.

Lorenzen, for his part, didn't get rocked the way he has at Coors Field, but he didn't have enough in the tank to hold a one-run cushion on the road either. Both bullpens were running on fumes after playing twice in one day on Saturday, and it showed in how carefully both managers handled the middle innings.
Neither team is playing for much beyond pride at this point in the season, but Sunday's finale at least gave the Giants something to carry into the break: a starter who looked like himself again, and a series win to show for a wild four games.
