Ryan Feltner (3-2, 4.27 ERA) gets the ball for Colorado, and he's been the one Rockies starter you can actually trust lately. Carson Whisenhunt (1-0, 3.60) draws the assignment for San Francisco after getting the call up from Triple-A Sacramento for this one — a 25-year-old lefty who's never faced the Rockies in his career.

The Rockies are live dogs here even on the road, and the market seems to be pricing recent form over the head-to-head history. Colorado has beaten this exact Giants roster in back-to-back series in Denver, and Feltner gives them a real edge with an established starter against a rookie call-up. Take the plus-money and bank on the trend continuing.

Whisenhunt's only other big-league look this year was a 5-inning, 2-run outing at Atlanta on June 17, so the Giants are leaning on a small sample against a lineup that's already seen success against San Francisco pitching twice this season. Colorado's rotation is a patchwork job with Jose Quintana, Tomoyuki Sugano, Chase Dollander and McCade Brown all out long-term, but Feltner has been the exception, not the rule.

San Francisco is still trying to shake off a series finale that manager Tony Vitello called a 'low point' — an 0-10 shutout in which Toronto's Dylan Cease carried a no-hitter into the ninth before Heliot Ramos finally broke it up. That's the kind of offensive no-show the Giants can't afford again with Matt Chapman, Daniel Susac and Harrison Bader all still out.

This is the third meeting between these two clubs this year, and Colorado has taken the first two series in Denver — two of three back in May, then two of three again just last week. That head-to-head history matters more than either team's overall record here; the Rockies haven't figured out how to beat much of anybody else, but they've had the Giants' number.

Neither team is playing for anything but pride at this point in the standings, but that's exactly why these four games in San Francisco carry a little extra juice — nobody wants to lose the season series to the other last-place club in the division.
