Ryan Feltner (4-6, 5.59 ERA) got the ball for Colorado and Merrill Kelly (8-9, 5.11 ERA) started for Arizona, and both arms had reason for confidence and reason to sweat. Feltner has quietly been the Rockies' steadiest starter since a late-May return, while Kelly came in with a career mark against Colorado that made him a heavy favorite on paper.

This one didn't come close to holding. Kelly gave up both Rockies homers and Arizona spotted Colorado a 6-1 hole before the eighth-inning rally fell two runs short. The bear case — Kelly's recent shakiness — was the whole story, and the career numbers against the Rockies meant nothing on this particular afternoon.

Pregame

Arizona's the club with something to play for, and the D-backs have controlled this season series against Colorado. Backing the home side at a short price is about as low-variance as moneyline bets get against a team running out a 5.71-ERA starter and a shredded rotation. Colorado's plus-money appeal is mostly about the number, not any real recent form.

Neither line was fully healthy behind the mound. Arizona is still waiting on Zac Gallen and Corbin Burnes to work back from the 60-day IL, and the outfield picture is a mess with Jordan Lawlar, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Tommy Troy all sidelined. Colorado, for its part, just lost Kyle Karros to the injured list a day after his two-run homer beat this same Diamondbacks team — the kind of roster churn that defines a 47-73 season.

The game turned early. Brett Sullivan turned a four-run second inning into a laugher with a three-run shot off the foul pole, and Zac Veen piled on with a homer in the fourth to push it to 6-1. Feltner worked around traffic all afternoon — Colorado walked 10 batters as a staff and still had enough cushion to hold on.

Kelly never found his rhythm, surrendering both Rockies homers and failing to complete six innings for the second straight month. Arizona clawed back behind Corbin Carroll, who tripled in the first inning — his MLB-leading 14th of the season — and later added a two-run homer during an eighth-inning rally that got the Diamondbacks within two runs before it ran out of gas.

This is where the two seasons diverge. Arizona is white-knuckling a wild-card spot and can't afford spoiler losses like this one, while Colorado has nothing to lose and is playing loose, young baseball under manager Warren Schaeffer as he tries to identify pieces for a rebuild. Torey Lovullo was upbeat afterward about getting shortstop Geraldo Perdomo back healthy, saying the team is "raising the standard" as injured players return — but a loss to a last-place club isn't the standard Arizona is chasing.

For a Diamondbacks team already thin in the rotation and outfield, dropping the finale to a rebuilding club stings more than the standings will show. For the Rockies, it's a second win in the set and a reminder that even a lost season can still ruin someone else's week.
